Smart Kids With Learning Disabilities Sets Free Workshops

FAIRFIELD — Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities is hosting a pair of free workshops for parents in the coming weeks. The Fairfield County-based nonprofit organization is dedicated to empowering the parents of children with learning disabilities (LD) and attention-deficit disorder (ADHD).

The organization’s mission is to educate, guide and inspire families of children with learning disabilities or ADHD — and to change the perception of learning disabilities as a stigmatizing condition.

A session titled “Minds In The Making: Executive Function Skills for Children” will be held Wednesday, April 13, from 10 am to noon at the Fairfield Public Library

This program focuses on the development of executive function skills, and is targeted for parents of children 5 to 12.

Executive function and strategic parent coach Ruthann Short, MSW, LCSW, and academic coach Mary Plotzker, MEd, will provide a developmental perspective on self-regulation and practical, research-based strategies as well as organizational tools, templates, and techniques for building children’s executive skills.

The Fairfield Public Library is at 1080 Old Post Road.

The next workshop, “Calm Down: How to Help Our Upset Children,” is set for April 26 at the New Canaan Public Library at 7 pm. Dr Julia Trebing of Creative Therapies will guide parents through the four stages of managing children’s anger and frustration, providing practical techniques for anticipating and dealing with challenging situations, as well as how to handle the aftermath.

The New Canaan Public Library is at 151 Main Street.

The programs are free; to register call 203-226-6703 or visit smartkidswithld.org.
