First Selectman Jack Rosenthal said April 8 it was âan absolute disgraceâ that some people have been dumping garbage on undeveloped sections of some town roads. During the month of March the Highway Department reported picking up and carting away 21 large truckloads of trash from five roads, he said. He said it is difficult for the town to prevent such dumping, because people must be caught in the act, and the dumping occurs in isolated areas.

Reviewing the proposed 1985-86 budget on April 9 and 10, the Legislative Council tentatively cut $527,000 from the Board of Educationâs budget and another $17,872 from the Board of Selectmenâs budget. The impact that the councilâs $527,000 reduction would have in the education budget was mitigated by council membersâ statements that a total of $385,000 of the items budgeted for the 1985-86 school budget could be funded by other ways.

Newtown High School track and field coaches have been waiting to have the track in Bruce Jenner Stadium lined, and it appears theyâll have to wait a little more. The track has been put off to last because of the difficulty in lining it. Last fall the rotting wood border that circles the track was pulled out and with it went the distance marks that were on the wood. Compounding the difficulty is that the quarter-mile track must be lined for metric-measured events. High school coaches were upset because their runners havenât had a chance to practice with lanes.

No doubt many of Connecticutâs anglers are concerned about the effect which the recent flooding conditions in most of our streams will have upon Opening Day success. It appears that stream levels on the 16th will be about back to normal. Waters are presently receding and unless weather condition change appreciably, the outlook is good, especially for smaller streams.

It is not a comforting thought to house-owners in Fairfield County that they must be on the watch for a possible infestation of termites, or âwhite ants.â And it is especially disquieting to Newtowners to know that within the past few days some of the pests have been found here. The men from the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station at New Haven will come to your aid and advise the treatment.
