And Grandmother

Emma C. Schroeder, 96, formerly of New Hyde Park, N.Y., died March 31, in Newtown Masonicare Nursing Home, after a brief illness. She had lived in Lockwood Lodge Assisted Living Facility since January 2004. Born in Ridgewood, N.Y., she was a daughter of Josefa (Putre) and Karl Slanovec from Austria.

Mrs Schroeder is survived by three sons, Robert J. Schroeder and wife, Joan Nash, of Newtown, John H. Petschauer and wife, Jean, Center Barnstead, N.H., and Curtis A. Schroeder and wife, Diana, Silver Spring, Md., and Connecticut. Other survivors include two siblings; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, Kurt Schroeder, predeceased Mrs Schroeder in November of 1974. Six siblings also predeceased her.

The Schroeders were married February 24, 1946, and lived in New Hyde Park for 58 years.

She was a wonderful wife and caring mother. Mrs Schroeder’s greatest enjoyment was sharing news about her family and watching the progress of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren’s lives. She also immensely enjoyed, over her long life, the close relationships and proximity she had with her many brothers and sisters. She grew up in a first generation family as one of nine siblings.

Mrs Schroeder worked in the former A&P grocery store’s main office in Garden City, N.Y., for 20 years, until her retirement.

Services were April 5. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jamaica, N.Y.
