NHS Animal Concerns Clubs Turns To Newtown Dogs

By Eliza Hallabeck

Quincy and Maximus were just two Newtown Dog Pound canine occupants who greeted members of the Newtown High School Vegetarian and Animal Concerns Club on Thursday, April 1, with wagging tails.

Students fed treats to each dog currently at the pound, as Animal Control Officer Carolee Mason and dog pound kennel attendant Matt Schaub escorted the students through the facility.

The tour of the pound came a few months after the students collected money to donate treats and more to the pound from a St Valentine’s Day Raffle. Those treats and items were delivered to the pound on last week, and handed to Ms Mason after the club’s tour.

“This town is such an animal-oriented town,” said Ms Mason while talking to students inside the pound, surrounded by multiple dogs, eagerly looking for treats and attention from the students.

Ms Mason said when speaking to other pounds in other towns, people are amazed at the efforts Newtown students go to.

Club founder Alissa Silber said raising money to make donations to the pound was something that fit with the Animal Concerns Club concept.

“I think they are all so adorable,” said Alissa, after the tour about the dogs at the pound, “with such great personalities. They are all just looking for a good home.”

Video of the dogs at the pound, with audio of Alissa speaking to the tour and about the club, is available at www.newtownbee.com.

“I think all the dogs are so great,” she said, “and they really do have a great staff.”
