Saturday Food Drive To Benefit Both Local Pantries

Newtown Woman’s Club GFWC Inc is holding its “Federation For Food” collection to help support both the Newtown Social Services-Salvation Army Food Cupboard, and the FAITH Food Pantry at St John’s Church in Sandy Hook.

The collection is happening Saturday, April 10, at the Newtown Stop & Shop in the Sand Hill Plaza in Botsford from 9 am to 3 pm.

According to Woman’s Club spokesperson Anna Wiedemann, the food collection is being held as part of the organization’s greater “commitment to our community.” She said the Newtown Woman’s Club GFWC, Inc, supports both of these pantries throughout the year, not only with food donations, but with volunteer hours.

“The Newtown Woman’s Club, Inc, and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Connecticut, continue to support local food pantries,” Ms Wiedemann said in a release. “To celebrate GFWC Federation Awareness Day, our club has organized a food collection for the Newtown food pantries the past three years. And we especially want to thank Stop & Shop for their partnership in this project by allowing us to use their facility.”

This year marks the Newtown Woman’s Club’s 41st year of community service. The organization is a member of both the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Connecticut, and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, an international organization, with more than 6,500 clubs in the United States and globally in more than 20 countries.

Members will greet shoppers at both entrances of the store during the donation collection, which is an annual in celebration held on GFWC Federation Awareness Day, Ms Wiedemann said.

Any woman who is interested in community service is invited to join. Members meet the third Thursday during the months of September through May at various locations.

Members are encouraged to participate in activities that relate to their individual strengths and passions, including the arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs, public service, as well as GFWC special projects and more.

To support the club’s many community service efforts, individual monetary donations can be made directly. Or to learn more about membership, interested individuals may direct inquiries by mail to: Newtown Woman’s Club GFWC Inc, PO Box 101, Newtown CT 06470 — Attention: Membership.
