Watercolor Artist Will Be Guest

At Next SCAN Program

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have Laura Wilk painting in watercolor at its next meeting, on Wednesday April 14, at 7:30 pm. The program will take place at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole). The public is invited; admission is free.

Ms Wilk is a Connecticut artist who has lived and worked in the state for most of her professional career, which has spanned 25 years. She started as a fiber artist painting on silk and now works exclusively in watercolor, primarily creating highly detailed, representational paintings.

Ms Wilk often picks her subjects by color, and is particularly drawn to the reds and oranges found in fruits and flowers. She works in transparent paint and layers extensively to get the deep, rich color that fill her paintings. She likes to change the mundane into the spectacular, by making her subjects radiate with light.

Most of her studies were done at the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, although she started in art with a Minor in Art History at New York University. She has taught watercolor techniques at the Weston Open Learning Program, teaches individual classes in her home, and is presently teaching a “Watercolor Techniques” class for SCAN.

Ms Wilk has had a number of solo shows and participated in many group shows in New York and Connecticut, receiving numerous awards, including the top award from Connecticut Watercolor Society. Her most recent awards were from the New England Watercolor Society and SCAN, as well as the Richard Ochs Watercolor Award from Kent Art Association.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN programs, but additional information is available by contacting Ruth Newquist at 203-426-6654.
