Newtown High School's tennis teams opened the season with matches against Weston — the girls on the road and the boys at home, at Treadwell Park — on April 6. The girls dropped a 7-0 decision and the boys lost 4-3.

Weston's boys have won the last three South-West Conference titles and the Weston girls won it all last year, making this an exciting and challenging start to the season for both Nighthawk squads.

"It's a fun first match," said Newtown's Frankie Cannizzo, who will alternate playing top singles with A.J. Singh and won at first singles in the opener.

Cannizzo prevailed in his match 6-3, 6-3; Singh won 6-0, 6-3 at second singles; and Brody Paulsen came out on top in come-from-behind fashion 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 at fourth singles. Weston posted wins at third singles and in each of the three doubles matches.
