A story in the April 4 edition of The Newtown Bee incorrectly reported the outcome of one of several votes taken at an April 2 Legislative Council meeting, and did not include the outcome of a vote on the school district budget proposal. On April 2, the council voted unanimously to accept the school district budget proposal of $66,031,044. The council voted 10-2 to accept a proposed general government budget submitted by the Board of Finance totaling $39,433,400, with council members Daniel Amaral and Joseph DiCandido voting against.
The council voted 9-3 to direct the Board of Selectmen to call a special town meeting to consider and act upon a âSpecial Appropriation In The Amount Of $38,826,000 For The Planning And Construction Of Additions And Renovations At Newtown High School, And Authorizing The Issuance Of Bonds To Meet that Special Appropriation.â Council Chairman Will Rodgers, councilmen John Aurelia and Joseph DiCandido voted against that motion.
In the same edition, a story about options for bringing back a failed high school referendum for subsequent votes reported that school district business manager Ronald Bienkowski said it might be possible to mount up to three referenda on the proposal. Mr Bienkowski said there could be two additional refereda if the original April 22 vote failed. In an interview for that story, Mr Bienkowski said that technically, two more votes could happen but only in a hypothetical scenario the newspaper was presenting. Mr Bienkowski did not put forth the assertion; he responded to a question about whether or not additional referenda would be possible.
