A lot of fingers and toes may have gotten numb and there was quite a bit of shivering going on over the past week, but the Newtown High School spring sports season lumbering into action with a lot of success across the board.

The girls’ lacrosse team opened defense of its 2005 and 2006 South-West Conference championships with convincing wins over Immaculate and Joel Barlow as the baseball, boys’ tennis, boys’ lacrosse, softball, golf, boys’ track and girls’ track all opened the new season with victories.

Even though the girls’ tennis team opened with a pair of losses, the boys’ lacrosse team dropped two to Brien McMahon and Joel Barlow and others were saddled with losses it was, nevertheless, a nice way to welcome spring.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Newtown 15, Immaculate 3

Newtown 13, Joel Barlow 7

Even though its offense is 100 goals and 70 assists lighter than it was a year ago – when it won its second consecutive South-West Conference championship – the Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team looks none the worse for wear.

Not after a pair of convincing wins over Immaculate (15-3) and Joel Barlow (13-7) to open the season.

Oh sure, the Lady Nighthawks looked a little in the dark and fell into a 2-0 hole in the first few minutes of its tilt with the Lady Falcons in Redding, but that was only a passing cloud on an otherwise bright and sunny day.

Five consecutive goals – three by Rachel Maley – put the locals in firm control of the game and the outcome.

Maley would finish with five goals and four assists, a spectacular offensive showing for the senior co-captain who was third on the team in goals (39) a year ago and second in assists (23). Courtney Gleason scored three goals while Betsy Vendel – off the same offensive play - notched three goals of her own.

Katie Sudbey added a pair of goals.

The defense – suffering through the graduations of middie Carly Curran and goaltender Kerrie Canavan – made a large contribution in the win. Co-captain Erica Vacaro was tenacious in her effort to slow the Barlow offense while Libby Feltch was solid in draw control. And as Moira Collier hustled around the field, co-captain Jen Greenwood was steady in her effort to ride and clear in the midfield.

In her first start in the cage, Lisa Isabella not only made nine saves but intercepted three Barlow passes, as well, to help keep the offense in check. Emma Kelly did score five times for the Falcons while Shannon Caruso scored twice, but the damage was limited.

The locals opened with a much easier 15-3 win over Immaculate last week. Nine different players scored with Gleason scoring three times and Vendel, Sudbey, Collier and Feltch scoring two apiece. Maley, Renee Solheim, Stephanie Paproski and Annie Fletcher also scored.

Isabella made nine saves in the cage.

The ‘Hawks hosted Weston on Thursday and will host Glastonbury on Tuesday, at Treadwell Park, in an 11 am start and New Milford on Thursday, also at Treadwell, in a 1 pm start.

BASEBALL

Newtown 11, Danbury 1

Wilton 7, Newtown 2

Ryan McGrath may have already signed his National Letter of Intent to play ball at Wake Forest, but he has some work left to do here.

And he got busy last week, doing it at the plate and on the mound as he led the Newtown High School baseball team to a season-opening 11-1 victory over Danbury on a frigid, snowy Thursday afternoon.

At the plate, the senior right-hander was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, home run and five RBI and on the mound, he fired a complete-game one-hitter, walking two, plunking two and striking out eight. The only run he allowed was unearned.

The offense was cooking right away, scoring six runs in the first two frames. The wind was howling early and the Nighthawks used it to their advantage with McGrath lashing a double and triple to the right-centerfield fence and Seth Hull ripping a run-scoring triple to right.

Nick Urso singled in a pair of runs while Alex Magoulas and Tony Gallucci singled in a run apiece. Meanwhile, the defense was nearly flawless, making just one error on the afternoon while freshman Keith McGrath was solid behind the dish.

The ‘Hawks had a much tougher time last Saturday against one of their Achilles’ Heels, Wilton. The locals dropped into a quick 5-0 hole after just two innings and eventually fell, 7-2, to the Warriors for the fifth year in a row.

Hull continued his hot start, going 3-for-4 with a double and RBI to spark the Newtown offense. Mike Tibbetts got the start on the hill, walking five and striking out five. Charlie LoBosco pitched an inning of relief.

The locals made four errors.

Newtown visited Bunnell on Wednesday and will host Bethel on Friday before making its annual trip, with Pomperaug, on Saturday to Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, New York. The locals will be in Weston next Monday and will host Joel Barlow on Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

Newtown 6, Bunnell 3

Lauralton Hall 2, Newtown 1

The Newtown High School softball team has had a history of pulling out dramatic wins over arch-rival Lauralton Hall.

History did not repeat itself, though, on Monday afternoon as the Lady Nighthawks dropped a 2-1 decision to the Crusaders to fall to 1-1 overall. Two sacrifice flies provided the only runs the Crusaders would need.

The ‘Hawks opened the season last week with a 6-3 win over Bunnell as Jenna Legros did the damage at the plate and off the rubber. While putting together a complete-game five-hitter, walking two and striking out five, Legros helped herself with a three-run triple in the second inning to fuel the offense.

Melissa Fracker and freshman Kate Bowen (3-for-4 in her first varsity game) also collected RBI singles in the five-run, second inning. Third baseman Joanna Barry went 3-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.

The Newtown offense was cooled considerably on Monday by Bridget Gates of Lauralton Hall, who allowed just five hits. One of those hits, though, was a solo home run by Barry (2-for-3 on the day) in the bottom of the seventh that gave the chilled home crowd something to cheer about.

Fracker, Katie Schmidt and Nora Lynn Shimko all had hits for the locals.

The Crusaders scored their first run in the opening frame when a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jessica Horvath scored Nikki Maier and added an insurance run in the top of seventh when Meggie Blozzon tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kiley Baird.

Another potential run on a sacrifice fly was snuffed out earlier in the game, though, when Newtown centerfielder Jaclyn Van Waalwijk fired a perfect strike to the catcher, Shimko, to easily nail the Lauralton Hall runner.

The ‘Hawks hosted New Milford on Wednesday and will be at Community Field in Southbury on Friday to take on Pomperaug. Next week, the girls will take on Weston (away), Greenwich and Joel Barlow on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in a busy spring vacation.

BOYS LACROSSE

Newtown 13, Immaculate 1

Brien McMahon 12, Newtown 2

Joel Barlow 15, Newtown 7

Head coach Brian Micena put together a challenging schedule for the 2007 season and the Newtown High School boys’ lacrosse team got a taste of it this past week.

After opening the new campaign with a convincing 13-1 win over Immaculate, the Nighthawks ran into a couple of state powerhouses and dropped a couple of one-sided decisions to Brien McMahon (12-2) and Joel Barlow (15-7).

In the win over Immaculate, Kevin Canavan scored five goals as Ben Mahony, Brian Reszoly and Brendan Martin scored two goals apiece. Jacob Dauz and Kyle O’Connor also scored as Zach Varga registered a pair of assists as Zach D’Agostino, Thomas Hutchison, Will Mahony, Conor Martin and Travis Speer notched one assist apiece.

Clarence Cheung made his debut in the cage and made four saves. Conor Martin and Brett Mauro combined to scoop 14 ground balls.

Things did not go as well as Brien McMahon on Saturday. The Senators took an 8-0 lead into halftime and coasted to the 12-2 finish. Christian Beitel and Ben Mahony both scored unassisted goals to lead Newtown.

Dauz scooped seven ground balls to lead the ‘Hawks. Cheung and Max Beitel shared time in the cage, with Cheung making 10 saves and Beitel making three.

The locals were holding their own against the Falcons on Tuesday night at Treadwell Park, scoring back-to-back goals to take a 2-1, first-period lead. But the Falcons closed out the half with 10 unanswered goals enroute to a 15-7 win.

The locals scored twice in the third and three times in the fourth period.

The ‘Hawks will host Branford on Friday before traveling to Weston next Tuesday for a 6 pm tilt.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lauralton Hall 4, Newtown 3

Joel Barlow 4, Newtown 3

Weston 4, Newtown 3

The spring has been fairly unkind, thus far, to the Newtown High School girls’ tennis team.

Coming off their first-ever South-West Conference championship, the Lady Nighthawks opened the 2007 season against three pretty tough opponents and were saddled with three  pretty tough losses – all by a count of 4-3.

Head coach Maureen Maher has had to re-shape her lineup with the loss of her No. 1, 2 and 4 singles players and her No. 1 doubles tandem and the adjustment has been rough. Kristene Salbu, the defending, undefeated SWC No. 3 singles champion, has stepped up to No. 1 and been hampered with losses to three of the top players in the league – Kat Patrikios of Lauralton Hall, Jennifer Holzberg of Joel Barlow and Alyssa Schaefer of Weston.

Christina Ciamarra, Lauren DeFelice, Maxx Zimmer and Charlotte Manos are now working singles while a new doubles rotation works behind two-time defending champions Katie Serock and Jenna Moser, now in the No. 1 slot.

Against Lauralton Hall, Zimmer stopped Meredith Elia 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles while Serock and Moser defeated Maggie Stern/Katerina Craft 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles and Erin Nemeth and Jenna Himmelfarb defeated Liz Vail and Patricia Culligan 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 doubles.

Against Joel Barlow, Manos defeated Tori Bailey 7-5, 6-0 at No. 4 singles while Nikia McFadden and DeFelice defeated Stephanie Allan and Sarah Fleischer 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles and Nemeth and Himmelfarb defeated Taryn Colonnese and Katie Lisi 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.

And against Weston on Tuesday, Himmelfarb and Zimmer both recorded singles wins (in a tough one, Zimmer topped Kate Chen 7-6, 7-5) while Moser and Serock topped Kyra Kaufman and Johanna Block 6-4, 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.

The locals hosted Bunnell on Wednesday and Bethel on Thursday in an attempt to snap out of their sluggish start. They won’t return to the court until after spring break.

BOYS TENNIS

Newtown 5, Masuk 2

Weston 7, Newtown 0

The intestinal fortitude of the Newtown High School boys’ tennis team was certainly tested in the opening week of the 2007 season – first by the weather and then by Weston.

The Nighthawks overcame the weather to stop Masuk, 5-2, at Treadwell Park last Thursday but were unable to stand up to Weston on Tuesday in a 7-0 loss and fell to 1-1 overall, 0-1 in the South-West Conference.

High winds, severe cold, and – briefly – hail tormented the Nighthawks as they opened the season against Masuk but the new-look ‘Hawks, bolstered by five promising freshman, put together an impressive 5-2 win.

Mario Roehrs won his first match at No. 1 singles, stopping Aaron Diamond 6-0, 6-3. Evan Batzer and Adam Wenick, Newtown’s No. 2 doubles a year ago, also recorded wins in their singles debuts while doubles tandems of Peter Manos/Colin Jacob and Max Paynter/Dan Cassidy opened with wins.

“It was an impressive debut, especially for the team’s five freshmen, who measured up to pre-season expectations, and whose strong performance holds out great promise for the future,” said head coach Marty Margulies.

Meanwhile, the freshman doubles team of Timo Roehrs and Casey Tenney put up a close fight against a senior tandem from Masuk but were held off 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

The locals did not have as much success against Weston on Tuesday, though. Roehrs and Manos, at No. 1 doubles, put up the stiffest challenge before succumbing 6-1, 7-5.

“We took more games in each of the first two doubles matches that our entire team has been able to win last year or the year before,” said coach Margulies. “And three of the four players in those matches, plus Jacob in third doubles, are freshman who have another three seasons in which to do even better.”

The locals visited Bunnell on Wednesday and Bethel on Thursday and won’t return to the court until after spring break.

GOLF

Pomperaug 160, Newtown 164

Newtown 164, Watertown 180

It may be a loss, but it’s still encouraging.

The Newtown High School golf team opened the 2007 season on Monday in a tri-match against Pomperaug and Watertown at Heritage Village Country Club in Southbury and came within four strokes of toppling the perennial South-West Conference powerhouse.

The Nighthawks dropped a 160-164 decision to the Panthers while slamming the Indians of Watertown, 164-180.

While Sean Pelletier of Pomperaug was medallist with an even-par 36, Steve Oberstadt of Newtown followed close behind with a 3-over 39. Coupled with a 4-over 40 by captain Billy McCann, a 5-over 41 by freshman Chris McCann and an 8-over 44 by Evan Gregoire and it was an encouraging start to the season.

The locals hosted Masuk on Thursday at the Newtown Country Club and won’t return to the course until after spring break.

GIRLS TRACK

Newtown 87, Brookfield 63

Newtown 125, Immaculate 14

The Newtown High School girls’ track and field team sure did lose a lot of firepower from a team that finished fourth in the South-West Conference a year ago, but the newcomers and those who had been waiting in the wings made their presence known on Tuesday.

Kelley Sullivan (100 dash), Alison McEmber (400 meters), Harriet Morgan (triple jump), Rachel Taback (shot put) and Lauren Sudbey (pole vault) captured individual wins as the Lady Nighthawks defeated Brookfield (87-63) and Immaculate (125-14) to open the season at 2-0.

Besides the individual wins and the sweep of the relays, the locals got a lot of back-end points, as well, when Kasey Schulz (100 dash), Elise DeRoo (1,600 meters), Julie Landin (400 meters), Marissa Bobkowski (300 hurdles), Jacqui Kirol (800 meters), Jen Brill (3,200 meters), Sudbey (long jump), Katie Condon (javelin and shot put) and Taback (discus) all captured second-place finishes, as well.

The ‘Hawks will return to the track on Tuesday, April 24, when they host New Fairfield, Notre Dame and Pomperaug.
