Good As Gold - Lacrosse Team Wins Tourney
Good As Gold â Lacrosse Team Wins Tourney
The Newtown Gold sixth grade girlsâ lacrosse team won five straight games to capture the championship at the Brookfield Ice Breaker Tournament on April 7.
The girls dominated their opposition by scoring 28 goals and giving up only six. The first game of the day saw Newtown topple Danbury 8-2.
Next came a victory over New Milford by the score of 5-2. As the air temperature started to warm up so did Newtown. The girls continued their dominance by blanking Pomperaug 5-0. Ridgefield was the only team left in the way to the number one seed and the championship game. Newtown once again took control and cruised to a 5-1 victory.
In the championship game Newtown faced the only other undefeated team, a fast and physical Norwalk squad. Norwalk had also swept their four games and looked to give Newtown all it could handle.
The game was a see-saw battle until the tenth minute when Newtown netted two quick goals. That would be all Newtown needed as the defense clamped down and completely frustrated the Norwalk attack. When Norwalk occasionally found shooting space, goalie Alex Futterman turned the ball away en route to a 5-1 win.
