Open House And Vintage Base Ball And Bat Demonstration Next For Historical Society
The Newtown Historical Society will host an open house at its headquarters on Sunday, April 15. The Matthew Curtiss House, at 44 Main Street, will be open from noon to 4 pm.
As Major League Baseball opens its 2012 season, Michael Paes and Ray Shaw â both of Newtown and members of The Newtown Sandy Hook Vintage Base Ball Club â will be on hand to take guests back to 19th Century-style baseball. Visitors will learn some of differences between not only the game of yesterdayâs baseball versus todayâs, but also the equipment used. Mr Paes, owner of Bull Dog Bats, will demonstrate his skill in crafting vintage baseball bats.
The public is also invited to visit and tour The Matthew Curtiss House. Admission is free; however, donations are welcomed and appreciated. Junior and senior docents will be available to answer questions about the house and its history, as well as provide guided tours by request.
The house museum, a fine example of Connecticut saltbox architecture, was constructed circa 1750 and purchased by Matthew Curtiss, Jr, in 1781. In 1970 the historical society purchased and restored the house to its original condition.
The historical society is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization. All funding comes from private donations, membership dues, bequests, and fundraisers. During the year members offer open houses with living history demonstrations, a lecture series, and a summer history camp for kids, among other special events.
New members are always welcome and volunteers are needed to help organize and run events. To join or for more information, visit www.NewtownHistory.org, find the historical society on Facebook, or call 203-426-5937.
