Scholarships Available

The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises parents and students to check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbb.org or 703-276-0100.

Newtown Federation of Teachers Scholarship — Newtown Federation of Teachers is offering one scholarship to a graduating Newtown senior intending to pursue a degree in the field of education. Each applicant must complete an essay. Applications are available in Naviance and in the Career Center. All applications are due to Ms Latowicki in the Career Center by April 25.

Earle Smith Past Presidents Scholarship — The Northern Fairfield County Retired Teachers’ Association will award a scholarship to a senior from local area high schools with strong interests in unified arts/vocational education. The application includes an essay and a letter of recommendation. Scholarship requirements and the application may be downloaded from the website www.nfcrta.org. The application and supporting documents must be received by Monday, April 30.

ConnTESOL Scholarship — The Connecticut Teachers to Speakers of Other Languages will be awarding three $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors. The awards will be given to students who are presently or have previously been enrolled in English language learner or bilingual education classes. Applicants should be planning to attend a four-year college or a community college in the fall of 2012. Applications may be downloaded via Naviance and the submission deadline is April 30.

Kappa Gamma Society Int’l Book Grant — Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma is offering two $250 book grants to two deserving seniors graduating from a high school in the greater Danbury area. The applicants must be pursuing a career in teaching with certification in Connecticut. Applications are available via Naviance and must be mailed with an official school transcript by May 10.

Mary Frances Edgett Scholarship & Memorial Scholarship — The Northern Fairfield County Retired Teachers’ Association will award two scholarships to seniors from local area high schools who aspire to careers in teaching. The $1,500 Mary Frances Edgett Scholarship and the $1,000 Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to students who intend to major in education and have careers in teaching. The application includes an essay and a letter of recommendation. Scholarship requirements and the application may be downloaded from the website www.nfcrta.org. The application and supporting documents must be received by Monday, April 30.

Newtown Junior Women’s Club Scholarship — The Newtown Junior Women’s Club will award one scholarship for $500 to a high school senior from Newtown. The award is open to any student planning a career in the field of special education or education. The award is also open to any special education students regardless of their career plans. All applicants must be planning to attend a full-time college, university, or community college. The award is based entirely upon merit without regard for financial need. The scholarship will be forwarded to the college of his/her choice for the purchase of books. Applications may be downloaded directly from Naviance and must be postmarked by April 25.

Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective — The Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective will offer one $1,000 scholarship for Connecticut students enrolled in an accredited two- or four-year college. The scholarship guidelines and application are available in the high school’s Career Center. The application including a transcript, two references, and an essay must be postmarked no later than April 30.

New Haven Pride Center David Knapp Scholarship — The New Haven Pride Center Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarship awards to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning students and allies. The Scholarship Committee takes into consideration academic accomplishments, leadership, community service, financial need, and personal story. Applications must be received by June 1. Application and guidelines can be accessed online at NewHavenPrideCenter.org.

Helen and Bob Brill Scholarship — Any LGBTIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, or ally) youth ages 16 to 24 who is currently attending or is planning to attend a college/technical school, or an accredited post high school program, and who is active in school or the community concerning LGBTIA issues is eligible to apply for the $2,000 scholarship. Judges will take into consideration the candidate’s support, education, or advocacy in the LGBTIA community, other interests, an essay, application answers, and recommendations. The application and instruction information is available in the high school’s Career Center and must be received by April 20.
