A Modzelewski’s heavy duty wrecker works to upright a tractor-trailer truck from the median of I-84 West, approximately one-half mile east of Exit 11, shortly after daybreak Tuesday, April 7. Connecticut State Police (CSP), CT DEEP, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue all responded to the scene of the rollover, which occurred around 5:04 am, according to the CSP report. Kevin O. Best, 39, of Plainville, told CSP troopers he was operating the 2020 International seen here in the left lane of three when he fell asleep and the truck veered to the left. The truck struck the median guide rail and then rolled onto its driver’s side. A 2026 Peterbilt tractor-trailer that had been traveling in the center lane behind the International was unable to avoid a collision with the out-of-control truck. The Peterbilt subsequently collided into the front portion of the International. Newtown Ambulance transported Best to a hospital due to suspected minor injuries. The Peterbilt received minor damage but did not need to be towed. Its driver was uninjured. Best was given a verbal warning for Failure To Maintain a Lane. —Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue photo
