Youth Wrestlers Excel In Maine

Members of the Newtown Youth Wrestling Club competed at the Marshwoods Invitational Tournament in Portland, Maine on April 2. The club, consisting of boys ages 4-14, participated through special invitation to this prestigious 19-mat event held in the Cumberland County Civic Center.

It is one of the largest youth wrestling events in the northeast, drawing clubs from all six New England states and New York. More than 1,200 wrestlers from 68 different teams competed in the day-long event.

The Newtown traveling squad sent 24 boys who have been practicing and competing together since the season began in late October. The competition, a double elimination-style event was an intense and challenging format for even the most accomplished grappler. Many of the participants were current and former New England champions.  The Newtown boys distinguished themselves at all age levels led by seven first-place finishers: William Henckel (Bantam 51 pounds), Shaine Luzietti (Bantam 83), Sean Arnold (Midget 61), Ed Lovely (Novice 91), Joe Accousti (Novice 92), Anthony Falbo (Novice 105), and Forest Speed (Schoolboy 139).

Also excelling were second-place finishers Chris Manfredi (Schoolboy 76), Chris Lajoie (Schoolboy 111), and James Leuci (Schoolboy 135), third place finishers Evan Rooney (Midget 50), and fourth place finishers Zachary Robinson (Bantam 53), Dylan Bartlett (Novice 94), Joseph Praino (Schoolboy 127) and Ed Lajoie (Schoolboy 147).

Other members of the team competing at Marshwoods include Luca Manfredi, Michael Carpenter, Ben Watson, Steven White, Gren Paynter, Thomas Leuci, Jacob Rooney, James Brown, Andy Hubina.

The NYWA team scored high in the team standings with almost all wrestlers finishing in the top six spots in their brackets and contributing points towards the overall championship. The Bantam division (born 2003-04) finished in 12th place among 48 teams, the Midget division (born 2001-02) finished 19th out of 53 entries, the Novice boys (born 1999-2000) finished fourth out of 60, and the Schoolboys (born 1997-98) finished fourth out of 55 teams.
