Filling The Pantries

To the Editor:

The Newtown Woman’s Club GFWC, Inc members would like to once again thank the shoppers who so generously donated food, cash, and gift cards this past Saturday at the Sand Hill Plaza Stop & Shop Supermarket. It was the clubs’ fourth Annual Federation for Food collection to benefit the FAITH Food Pantry and Salvation Army Food Cupboard. Each year the club organizes this project to commemorate the day back in 1890, when the General Federation of Women’s Clubs was formed. The Newtown Woman’s Club GFWC, Inc has been a member of GFWC/CT since 1968.

While donations began on the slow side, shoppers and residents came through and helped “overstuff” more than six shopping carts by the end of the day. Monetary donations were $200, with one lady handing us five $10 gift cards…to this anonymous woman — a special thank you! Many donors told us that it’s their turn to pay back the pantries, since they themselves had to use them at one time or another. As usual, many donors thanked us for doing this collection.

I must thank Dawn Altieri, customer service manager at Stop & Shop, for allowing us the opportunity to be at both entrances; it is a partnership we hope will continue. Special thanks goes to The Newtown Bee for the great article in last week’s issue, which helped bring many donors out especially since they read the article. Thank you Newtown Bee! Thank you must also be given to the clubwomen who once again agreed to give up part of their Saturday to come and help make this project a success…thank you ladies!
