Scholarships Available

To Newtown High School Students

The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified.

A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises parents and students to check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbb.org or 703-276-0100.

Newtown Youth Football/Cheerleading Scholarship — The Newtown Youth Football/Cheerleading Scholarship awards are intended to provide financial assistance to high school seniors who will continue their education after graduation (college, university, technical/professional school). Students must be or have been a participant in the Newtown Youth Football/Cheerleading program with either Pop Warner or American Youth Football and demonstrate personal qualities deserving of this award. Applications are available to download from Naviance. All completed applications are due to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by April 26. The board will present selected applicants with their awards at the High School Awards Ceremony.

Bill of Rights Essay Contest — This year’s essay contest sponsored by the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) is for female college-bound high school juniors or seniors, Class of 2010 or 2011. Each of seven winners will receive an unrestricted $3,000 scholarship for college and an all-expense paid trip to NFWL’s 2010 Annual Conference in the November. Applicants must submit a 400- to 600-word essay on the topic, “Freedom and Civic Virtues.” The website www.womenlegislators.org/events/scholarship-program.php has details on the essay topic document and contest rules. All applicants will be required to secure a state legislator as her sponsor and that legislator must also agree to attend the entire conference. The application deadline is July 30.

Wendy’s High School Heisman Award — For the past 16 years, Wendy’s Restaurants and the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee have sponsored the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, which honors both male and female students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership. The application process is now open to all rising high school senior student athletes, Class of 2011, who work hard, are dedicated, and have become role models for the school’s underclassmen. The application period extends through October 3. Applicants must have at least a B average and participate at school in at least one school-sponsored sport. The online nomination form must be completed by students and reviewed and confirmed by a high school official. Interested students should go to www.wendysheisman.com for complete details. The first 41,100 students that complete an application will receive a Wendy’s Gift Card in amounts ranging from $5 to $50.

Disabled Workers’ Scholarship — This scholarship will assists high school students who are children of workers who have been totally disabled in the workplace residing in Connecticut. The injury must have arisen out of the workplace. The student should demonstrate academic excellence and financial need for college. The program will offer two one-year scholarships of $5,000. The Career Center has applications. The application deadline is April 15.

Connecticut Air & Waste Management Scholarship — The Connecticut Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association has initiated a scholarship program to improve knowledge and skills in the fields of air and waste management. Applicants must be Connecticut residents that are high school seniors accepted as full-time students or full-time college students. Applicants must be pursuing or planning to pursue courses of study in science or engineering leading to careers in the environmental field, especially air pollution control or waste management. The scholarship award is $1,000. Download an application from the Connecticut chapter at www.awmanewengland.org/connecticut_chapter.htm. The application deadline is April 15.

Connecticut Teachers to Speakers of Other Languages (ConnTESOL) Scholarship — The Connecticut Teachers to Speakers of Other Languages will award three scholarships to graduating high school seniors. The awards will be given to a student who is presently or has previously been enrolled in ELL or bilingual education classes. The application packet contains a 250–500-word essay on the following topic: “A different language is a different vision of life.” (Federico Fellini) Explain how your education has influenced your life and your future plans. Applicants should be planning to attend a four-year college or a community college in the fall of 2010. Download an application from Naviance. The deadline for applications is April 30.

UCB Family Epilepsy Scholarship Program — This national scholarship program, sponsored by the makers of Keppra, a medication for epilepsy, will provide one-time $5,000 scholarships to students with epilepsy. The program also assists family members and caregivers. The selection process is based on both academic and personal achievement through participation in activities outside of school and the qualities of a positive role model. Complete information is available from www.ucbepilepsyscholarship.com. Applicants must apply online by April 23.

Mutual Security Community Service Scholarships — Six individual scholarships for $1,000 will be awarded to local high school seniors with a record of exemplary community service, good academic standing, and financial need. The scholarships are awarded in honor of Berny Klaus and Joseph G. Fernandes. Applicants need to be a MSCU member or the child of a member with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Students must submit a two-page essay on community service, an application, qualification information about financial need. Applicants will be evaluated on essay, grades, financial need, curriculum, and community service. The deadline is April 30. Applications are available from www.mscu.net/pdf/CSSA_0108.pdf.

Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation Scholarship — Several $1,500 renewable scholarships will be awarded to girls who have received the Silver Award in the Girl Scouts of America and plan to pursue a college major or minor in a foreign language. There were 16 academic scholarships awarded last year. High school applicants must have a B average, be accepted at an accredited college for full-time study and intend to major OR minor in a foreign language. There is also a separate $1,000 grant to study language abroad where there is not the requirement of having a foreign language major or minor. Applications and all details are available from www.cjsfoundation.org. All materials must arrive by May 14.

John M. Bailey Memorial Scholarship Award — These scholarships sponsored by the Connecticut Criminal Justice Educational & Charitable Association will be awarded to high school seniors and undergraduates who plan to major in any of the public service fields of study such as criminal justice, fire study, homeland security, legal studies, etc. The awards are based on character and leadership qualities in school and in the community as well as scholastic aptitude. Applications may be downloaded from www.ccjeca.org. Three letters of recommendation are required and an interview may be required. Applications must be postmarked by May 1.

National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Scholarship — Scholarships in the amount of $2,500 are available from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation to graduating high school seniors who plan to continue their education in the restaurant and foodservice industries. Applicants must be accepted and plan to enroll in an accredited program in culinary, restaurant management or other foodservice related major. The application is online at www.nraef.org/scholarships. All documentation must be postmarked by August 18.

Pfizer Epilepsy Scholarship — Pfizer will award 40 one-year $2,000 scholarships to outstanding students who have overcome the challenges of epilepsy. Graduating high school seniors who will attend college are eligible to apply. Successful applicants demonstrate success in school, involvement in activities and show a desire to continue in college. All applicants must be under a physician’s care for epilepsy. The application forms may be downloaded from the website after entering the registration information. All application materials must be submitted by June 15 by mail. Emailed applications will not be accepted. Go to www.epilepsy-scholarship.com to register and download an application.

Connecticut Water Pollution Abatement Association Scholarship — This scholarship is open to Connecticut high school students who plan to graduate in May/June 2010 and pursue an environmental curriculum at a college or university in the fall of 2010. Students must have a minimum of 3.0 (out of 4.0) GPA and submit a resume outlining their academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Applicants must include the reasons for applying for this scholarship and an explanation of the inspiration to want to study in the field of environmental science. The $500–$2,000 awards will be paid directly to the recipient. Applications are available at www.cwpaa.org/2010CWPAAscholarshipform.pdf. The submission deadline is May 7.

Mouse Hole Scholarships — Applicants must be legally visually impaired or be a sighted student with a parent or parents who are legally visually impaired to be eligible for this national scholarship program. Proof of visual impairment may be requested before awards are presented. The 2010 awards are one $2,500 scholarship and one $1,500 award. Interested students should go to www.blindmicemart.com for complete details on the application process. The deadline is May 15.

Stephen Phillips Scholarship — High school seniors from New England states are eligible for this scholarship program. Awards usually range from $3,000 to $10,000 and are renewable. Last year, 145 students received new awards through this program. Applicants should demonstrate an excellent academic background, exemplary citizenship, character and serious-mindedness, and financial need. Additional details and applications are available at www.phillips-scholarship.org. All materials are due by May 1.

Helen and Bob Brill Scholarship — Any LGBTIA student who is currently attending or planning to attend a college/technical school or an accredited post high school program and is active in school or the community concerning LGBTIA issues is eligible to apply for this $2,000 scholarship. The award must be used to fund post-high school education. Judges will evaluate the advocacy in the LGBTIA community, two letters of recommendations, essay and recommendations. Interested students should go to www.pflaghartford.org/brill.html for applications and information. The application deadline is April 15.

CALAHE Scholarship — The Connecticut Association of Latinos in Higher Education (CALAHE) provides $1,000 college scholarships for Latino graduating high school seniors who will attend an accredited college or university. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who demonstrate financial need and have a B average. Students must also show an involvement with and commitment to activities that promote Latinos in the pursuit of higher education. Interested students should go to www.calahe.org/scholarships.php for additional information and applications. The application deadline is April 16.

Latino Scholarship Program for Engineering — Naugatuck Valley Community College has financial aid packages reserved for eligible Latino’s to enroll in the Engineering Technology programs for the Fall 2010 classes. The Engineering Technologies Division prepares students for immediate employment, as well as for transfer to BA and university programs. To qualify, students must be enrolled full-time in engineering (12+ credits), be of Hispanic descent and eligible for financial aid. The following areas are included: automated manufacturing; computer aided drafting and design; fire technology and administration; automotive technician; mechanical engineering and electronic engineering technology.
