Families United in Newtown (FUN) is planning a night of music for Friday, May 9. The performance will start at 7 pm and will be at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street.

The concert will feature tunes for all types of music lovers.

Scheduled performers will include members of the Newtown High School Chorus, violinists Lindsey Jones and Isaac Ohring, pianist Wesley Morlock, and vocalist Megan Bernardi. The musicians are students of Newtown High School, Suzuki Talent Education School in Sandy Hook, and Western Connecticut State University in Danbury. 

John Voket, Newtown Bee Associate Editor, is serving as Master of Ceremonies and is also scheduled to perform.

Admission to the concert is free, but FUN will be accepting donations at the door for continued support of the program and autism awareness. Light refreshments will be served after the event, giving the audience a chance to meet and interact with the performers.

Families United in Newtown started fundraising in 2008 with the dream of providing a recreational program for families in the surrounding area with special needs children. In 2009, following the unexpected death Tyler Jones, the son of the program’s founders, FUN started to take materialize with support of the Newtown High School National Honors Society students.

In October 2010 FUN had its first monthly meeting in memory of Tyler. The group has continued monthly meetings since then, excluding the summer months.

The ultimate goal of FUN is to provide an outlet for families with special needs children as well as promote autism awareness in the community.

The May FUN meeting will be held during the May 9 concert, in the church’s Great Room. Newtown High School junior and senior National Honors Society students will provide care for the special needs kids as well as other children who need child care during the concert.
