The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognized Connecticut and two local physicians, one from Newtown, as Immunization Champions for helping to achieve the third highest childhood immunization coverage rate in the nation.
Dr Veronica Ron-Priola, medical director of the Danbury Hospital Pediatric Health Center, and Dr Jack Fong, chairman of Pediatrics at Danbury Hospital, were nominated by the Danbury Visiting Nurse Association, Inc Immunization Action Program (DVNA IAP). They will be honored at a ceremony in the Legislative Office Building on April 23.
Drs Ron-Priola and Fong were recognized for their tireless efforts in raising awareness to ensure that children are protected against childhood preventable diseases as well as increasing the coverage rate in the greater Danbury area.
Connecticut has been in the top five percent in achieving immunization coverage rates for the past 12 years. The state continues to be a national leader due to the efforts of community-based and private organizations that have demonstrated diligence in raising awareness of the importance of having children immunized.
