A Need For Honesty About Gay Marriage
A Need For Honesty
About Gay Marriage
To the Editor:
I often hear people say marriage should only be between a man and a woman. I have yet to hear why. Simply saying so doesnât make it so.
I hear arguments against gay marriage based on the Bible. Now, should we legalize polygamy and slavery? They are accepted in the Bible. The Bible condemns divorce. Yet divorce is legal. And many religions look the other way when it comes to divorce. So why is the religious argument so selective to this one issue? Can it be the Biblical argument is merely convenience? Can it be this argument is used to disguise simple discomfort with gay couples, regardless of fidelity?
Gay marriage is already a fact in Connecticut. It is a recognized civil right in Connecticut. There is no need to coerce churches to recognize gay marriage. There is, however, need for honesty. A civil union is a marriage. No more games. Letâs call civil union what it is.
Sincerely,
