As winter has given away to spring (or so the calendar says), the Newtown Youth Wrestling program continues to plod along and bring home the hardware.
Continuing its trek through New York state, Newtown traveled to Brewster on March 25 for the annual Brewster Youth Wrestling Tournament and then to Burnt Hills (outside Albany) on April 1 for the 27th annual Burnt Hills Youth Wrestling Tournament.
As the competition intensified, Newtownâs wrestlers were up to the challenge, with multiple champions and several high placings.
âAs the level of competition increases, weâve seen our wrestlers step up to the challenge,â said coach Chris Bray. âThese tournaments are great opportunities to experience different types of wrestlers, levels of competition and gain overall mat experience. Newtown youth wrestling continues to make progress.â
At the Brewster Tournament, division champions were Forest Speed, Luca Crudo and Darjay Gyamcho as Kevin Ross Jr., Matt Gonzalez, Nicholas Crudo, Tiernan Keane, Anthony Falbo, Andy Hubina and Edward Lovely earned runner-up status. Cory Fisher and Sean McGrath grabbed third-place finishes.
Chinguun Gyamcho, Ethan Ross, Ed Lajoie, Christopher Lajoie and Ryan Wagner also participated.
At the Burnt Hills Tournament, Andy Hubina handily won his division while Nicholas Crudo, Luca Crudo, Kevin Ross Jr. and Edward Lovely placed third. Ethan Ross and Darjay Gyamcho captured fourth.
For this tournament, the top three finishers in each division automatically qualified for the 2007 Tournament of Champions in Columbus, Ohio.
Also, on March 31, the Ross brothers traveled to the 19th Annual Red Hook Rotary Kids Wrestling Tournament in Red Hook, New York, and both wrestlers did well, with Kevin Ross Jr. winning his division and Ethan Ross placing third.
The team travels next to the 2nd annual Journeymen Wrestlingâs Youth Tournament this weekend in East Greenbush, New York.
