âMockingbirdâ Author Charles Shields To Speak At NHS
By Nancy K. Crevier
The NewtownREADS To Kill A Mockingbird events continue with the appearance of Charles Shields, author of Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee, at the Newtown High School lecture hall on Thursday, April 26, at 7:30 pm.
Mr Shields is a former English teacher and has written nonfiction books for young adults. He has a BA in English and an MA in American history from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where he was a James Scholar.
Mockingbird is the result of four years of research and more than 600 interviews with people who knew Harper Lee. Because Ms Lee has refused to give interviews since 1964, Mr Shields relied on personal accounts, courthouse and historical archives, and the papers of Ms Leeâs agent to gather the information that has resulted in the first biography of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Ms Lee, whose only novel was To Kill A Mockingbird.
âMockingbird helps you to understand where many of the characters in To Kill A Mockingbird come from,â said Booth librarian Kim Weber, who has organized the author talk with Mr Shields.
How Harper Leeâs life growing up as a tomboy in Alabama, her friend Truman Capote, and the murder trial prosecuted by her lawyer father A.C. Lee contributed to the basis for one of the most widely read American novels, as well as the mysterious persona of the To Kill A Mockingbird author, will be divulged by Mr Shields at the April 26 program.
Mr Shields will also meet with various Newtown High School English classes during the day.
âWe are very pleased that Mr Shield has taken time from his busy book tour to be here in Newtown,â said Ms Weber.Â
The free lecture, followed by a question and answer period, is appropriate for ages 12 and up. A limited number of copies of Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee will be for sale that evening at a reduced price of $20.
