Norwalk Youth Symphony To Host

An Open House This Month

NORWALK — Norwalk Youth Symphony will sponsor its annual open house on Saturday, April 28, between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm, at Norwalk City Hall, 125 East Avenue.

The event is open to all young musicians of this region who will be entering fourth through 12th grades next year and their parents as well as to music teachers. Those attending will have an opportunity to observe orchestra rehearsals, speak with conductors and current members, and obtain general information about the NYS organization. Reservations are not necessary.

The purpose of Norwalk Youth Symphony, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, is to provide the finest possible orchestral and performing opportunities for the young people of this area. Currently, approximately 250 members from 25 communities throughout Fairfield, Westchester, New Haven and Litchfield counties belong to four orchestras on beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Three concerts are given each year in Norwalk.

In addition, several outreach programs are presented in Connecticut and at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, the United Nations Plaza and the Plaza at Lincoln Center.

NYS also sponsors a Chamber Music Program, in which young musicians are introduced to the joys of performing with small groups of peers. These ensembles are coached weekly by professional musicians.

It also sponsors Lessons in the Schools, which provide middle school students whose families have financial constraints with private instruction at little or no cost.

Norwalk Youth Symphony is looking for musicians who play the violin, viola, cello, bass as well as flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion instruments. Admission is by audition at the end of August and the first week of September.  For further information, call 203-866-4100 or send e-mail to info@NorwalkYouthSymphony.org.
