Butterflies And Their Gardens:

Program By John Himmelman

The members of The Garden Club of Newtown will learn more about the butterflies of the area this month when John Himmelman presents his program “Butterflies and Their Gardens.” The public is invited to attend the slide presentation on Tuesday, April 24, at 1 pm. It will be in the lower meeting room of Cyrenius H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.

John Himmelman has been making a living as an author, illustrator and photographer for over 26 years and has been a naturalist and lepidopterist for even longer.  In the spring of 2006 his book Discovering Amphibians, Frogs and Salamanders of the Northeast was published, following Discovering Moths, Nighttime Jewels in Our Yard.

He is currently under contract with Stackpole for a field guide to the night singing insects of the Northeast and with Harvard for a book of a series of narratives on crickets and katydids. He is the prolific author of 65 children’s books as well as the author and illustrator of the popular A Monarch’s Life.

A founding director of the Connecticut Butterfly Association, Mr Himmelman has led butterfly trips throughout New England.  He has traveled to many states as well as to Canada and South America in search of butterflies and to lecture.

“Butterflies and Their Gardens” will focus on the common species of Connecticut and New England and their habitats. Mr Himmelman will also discuss planting a garden to attract butterflies.  Some of his books will be available for purchase.

There is no charge to attend and registration is not necessary. For more information call 270-1108.
