Volunteers Sought

For Food Drive

To the Editor:

Last week’s Bee featured a good article by Nancy Crevier on volunteerism. If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity but are unable to make a regular commitment to an organization, please consider helping us at the Annual Postal Food Drive held on Saturday, May 12, at the office of Newtown Social Services.

Adult volunteers are needed in the morning to drive a designated postal route and pick up bags of food left by residents near their mailboxes. Volunteers 16 years and older are needed to sort and stock the food that is delivered to us by volunteer drivers and postal mail carriers. We work throughout the day and need a lot of helping hands.

If you are able to spend even one hour of your day with us, please call Social Services at 270-4330 to sign up. Last year’s volunteers included students, retired seniors, and all ages in between. Community service letters are available, and pizza is provided by supportive local restaurants.

The other way that you can help on May 12 is by leaving a bag of food by your mailbox early in the day. Our drivers are out by 9:30 in the morning. We have heard from many people that the Newtown residents “in the big houses in town” don’t participate as much as others. Many streets are bare. Let’s change that attitude this year by contributing and encouraging others in your neighborhood to follow suit.

We hope to see you on May 12.
