Boys’ Tennis Team Blanks Two Opponents

Newtown High School’s boys’ tennis team followed up a season-opening 5-2 win over Pomperaug of Southbury with a pair of 7-0 triumphs over Stratford and New Fairfield, April 11 and 16, respectively.

In the win over Stratford, Stefan Hennessey and Wes Morlock competed in and won their first doubles match, in the No. 3 position, and Mike Dutsar, at No. 4 singles, notched his first win.

Cam McCleary, Tyler Ruefenacht, and Ricky Fuentes, in the first through third singles spots, all came out on top. Newtown’s top two doubles teams were comprised of Keaton McCleary and Yossi Kohrman-Glaser, and Mason West and Adam Oelberg, respectively.

The Nighthawks, in their win over New Fairfield, got singles wins from Cam McCleary at No. 1, followed by Ruefenacht, Fuentes, and Sean Elliott, all won. Keaton McCleary and Oelberg combined for a win in the top doubles spot. Nic Klein and Charlie Porach won at second doubles, and Hennessey and Kunal Marwah won via forefeit at third doubles.

“Although we miss Rob Beier, who remains sidelined with a knee injury,” said Newtown Coach Marty Margulies, referring to the team’s top singles player from a year ago, “we are fortunate in having at least five players in back of him who could beat one another — and possibly even a healthy Rob as well — on a given day. I hope that this depth, combined with some real strength at the doubles positions, will propel us into our fifth consecutive postseason.”

The Nighthawks were scheduled to entertain Bunnell of Stratford in their first home match on Wednesday (after The Bee sports section went to press). The Nighthawks visit New Milford on Monday, April 23, and host Immaculate of Danbury on April 25.
