NHS Winter Guard Performs Well

At World Championship

Earning the highest scores ever achieved by a Newtown color guard at a Winter Guard International Color Guard World Championship, the Newtown High School Varsity Winter Guard was ranked 22nd in the world in the Scholastic A division, following its stellar performance in the 2012 Winter Guard World Championships held in Dayton, Ohio, April 12–14.

With a score of 84.9, Newtown missed a slot in the finals by 2.2 points, having climbed nine slots following their preliminary competition. The only Connecticut Scholastic A winter guard to make it to Dayton for the Winter Guard International Championships, the NHS Varsity Guard competed against 102 of the best Color Guard units in the country. There are nearly 900 Scholastic A winter guard teams in United States high schools.

“I am so proud of this guard,” said instructor Bob Findley, who traveled to Dayton along with staff members Michelle Liscio, Tory Whittington and Janos Pergely.

Mr Findley noted that with just four seniors graduating, he is looking forward to seeing how the Newtown Color Guard performs in both the Fall Marching Band & Guard season, with sign-ups set for June 13, as well as the Winter Guard 2013 competitions.

The Newtown Varsity Winter Guard members are: Captains Victoria Hanulik, Sara Hetzer, and Grace McKinley; seniors Jess Sideleau and Becca Tobin; juniors Cherokee Belval, Melissa Christiano, April Corbo, Caitlin FitzGerald, Brandon Ghent, Grace Hubbard, Meaghan Kelly, and Haley Malin; sophomore Paige Thanosoulis; freshmen Courtney Datin, Kayleigh Granville, Caitlin Jones, and Kelsea Morshuk; and eighth grader Camryn Gaudett.
