Police Investigate

Drug Store Burglary

Police are investigating a burglary and theft that occurred overnight April 13–14 at Newtown Drug Center at 61 Church Hill Road.

Police Chief Michael Kehoe said the crime represents the first such break-in at a local drug store in recent memory.

Sometime between 8:30 pm on April 13 and 5 am on April 14, someone cut wiring to ostensibly disable a burglar alarm and then forced open the rear door at the drug store, police said.

The burglar or burglars stole an estimated $600 worth of prescription drugs and $600 in cash from the store, police said. The crime involved burglary, larceny, and criminal mischief.

“We’ll look at all angles,” Chief Kehoe said of the drug store burglary.

Police plan to compare notes with police in other towns to learn if similar crimes occurred there, and if so, whether links may exist between the crime in Newtown and similar crimes elsewhere, the police chief said.
