Wildcats 2, Lightning Strikes 0: On a very cold April morning, the Wildcats and Lightning Strikes played a well-balanced and exciting match that was scoreless through three quarters. The Wildcats were able to break the tie in the fourth quarter with goals by Kaley Meisenheimer and Hannah Groonell. Kaley also assisted on Hannahâs goal. The Wildcat attack was led by Rylee Harrell and Colleen Phaneuf who made a great pass to set up the second goal and earn an assist. The Wildcatsâ tight defense was led by the solid play of Isabella Butler and Kaia Gioffre. The Lightning Strikes defense was equally stingy, led by the strong play of Olivia Cavallero and the formidable goaltending of Mary Sortino. Becca Filiato displayed strong ball handling skills while playing a solid all around game. Olivia Cornett kept up the pressure on offense, but unfortunately the Lightning Strikes could not find the net.

Smurfs 4, Funky Socks 0: The Smurfsâ (Carolina Stubbs and Eirenie Athanasoulis split duties) was one of the warm spots on this cold, windy soccer opener. The Smurf defense, led by newcomer Briana Lovely, froze the attack of the Funky Socks offense. Two goals by Veronica Vodola and one each by Angela Voldola and Julia Clark, with assists by Katelyn Henchcliffe and Alyssa Ross, heated things up as they showed hustle with good team play and ball movement. On defense for team Funky Socks, Emma DaSilva was a force to be reckoned with and Lizzie Hodge dominated the midfield with great moves. Malia Gioffre had lightning in her cleats as she made numerous drives to the goal.
Stamford Gold 8, Sparks 2: The Newtown Sparks fell in their season opener. The Sparksâ strong offensive efforts were thwarted by an even stronger Stamford defense. The hard-working offense of Nathalie Schickendantz, Jackie Seras, and Madi Ziperstein charged Stamfordâs goal numerous times. The Sparksâ goals were scored by Emily Celentano in the first half and Lindsay Merrifield in the second half with an assist from Ziperstein. Seras and Kristen Cirione played well in goal.
Dynamites 6, Westport 0: The Dynamites had a phenomenal passing game in the win. The girls rarely let the visitors get deep into their territory with determined defensive play by Grace Corcoran, Lu Hage, Alison Kelleher, Lauren Carrino, and Audrey Benson. In the first half, shots were netted by Alison Kelleher, Rebecca Gavel, with an assist my Brooke Antous and a long bomb by Lauren Carrino. Shots on goal were logged by Benson and Hage, with Lindsay Merrifield helping to control the tempo on offense. Jenna Lavelle had a save in goal. Emily Celentaro had the first goal of the second half, and then assisted Lavelle. The final goal came from Rebecca Gavel. Hage had two saves in the goal.
