New York Polyphony To Perform At Trinity, April 30

Music @ Trinity will present the gala event of the 2010-11 season, a concert on Saturday, April 30, at 8 pm, by the renowned choral ensemble New York Polyphony.

The quartet group is gaining a reputation as the preeminent male classical vocal quartet in the fields of early and new music. Praised for a “rich, natural sound that’s larger and more complex than the sum of its parts” (National Public Radio), the four men deliver dynamic performances in a wide range of styles. From austere medieval melodies to cutting edge contemporary works, NYP balances refined musicianship with a uniquely modern sensibility.

Members are Geoffrey Williams, countertenor; Geoffrey Silver, tenor; Christopher Dylan Herbert, baritone; and Craig Phillips, bass.

Hailed as a “stunning tour through chant, polyphony and renaissance harmonies” (Minnesota Public Radio), their current CD Tudor City spent three weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard’s classical album chart. It has been featured on Danish Public Radio, American Public Radio and NPR’s “All Things Considered.” Recently, the CD was ranked #3 on the Best of 2010 New Sounds listener poll on New York City’s WNYC 93.9 FM.

NYP’s debut CD I sing the birth was released in 2007. The disc, an intimate meditation on the Christmas season, garnered unanimous praise. Gramophone Magazine named it “one of the season’s best”, BBC Music Magazine selected it as Editor’s Christmas Choice 2007, and Classic FM Magazine hailed it as “a disc for all seasons.”

Since its founding in 2006, New York Polyphony has maintained an active performing schedule. The ensemble has participated in major concert series and festivals throughout the US and Europe, including the Miller Theatre Early Music Series at Columbia University, Dallas Chamber Music Series, Ireland’s Pipeworks and Ardee Baroque Festivals, Denmark’s Vendsyssel Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center.

NYP has also been heard on Footprints to Paradise: A Medieval Christmas for Public Radio International, New Classical Tracks for Minnesota Public Radio, and Performance Today for National Public Radio. In 2011, New York Polyphony begins a residency at Smith College, Massachusetts.

Trinity Church is at 36 Main Street, at the “flagpole” in the center of Newtown.  The beautiful acoustics of Trinity make it an ideal locale for this concert of a cappella choral music, which will be followed by a wine and cheese reception.

There will be a freewill offering for the concert, no tickets are required.
