Newtown 9, Weston 5: Senior, Chris Haylon got the start for the Hawks and went four full innings, allowing no runs, three hits, and striking out three Trojans as NHS improved to 3-0 and Haylon improved to 2-0. Ryan Tita closed the game for the Nighthawks, pitching 12/3 innings of scoreless ball. Sophomore Mike Koch got his first varsity experience and did a solid job on the hill, throwing a strong inning and a third. The Nighthawks had doubles by Ryan Powers, Kyle Wilcox, Kyle Packer, and RJ Roman. Packer, Roman, and Tita all had two runs batted in, and Tita contributed a pair of hits. Senior Bryan Czel got his first action of the year as he returned from an injury and had a hit and an RBI. The Nighthawk defense continues to shine, as the fielders played errorless ball for the third straight game.
Bethel 4, Newtown 0: Bethel pitcher Andy Guerico went all seven innings, limiting the Newtown offense to only four hits. Bethel jumped out to 4-0 lead on two first-inning hits and four first-inning walks. Roman, Newtownâs starter, settled down after a difficult first inning, allowing no runs and only two hits the rest of the way. Newtownâs offense was silent for the afternoon as Tita was the only Nighthawk with an extra-base hit. Other Nighthawks contributing singles were Roman, Powers, and freshman first baseman Mike Davis.
Newtown 8, Ansonia 6: The fans who came out to Nolan field in Ansonia Saturday morning had no idea what they were in store for. No, not the 40 degree temperatures and 20 mph wind gusts, but the fact that the game would go 12 innings and have the score change hands several times. Each time the Nighthawks thought they had the game won, the Ansonia Chargers charged back.
Wilcox got the start and allowed just runs on two hits in five innings. Wilcox struck out nine of the 22 Ansonia hitters he faced. He left the game in the fifth inning, turning it over to senior Brian Reed who proceeded to throw a strong 22/3 no-hit innings, allowing only one run. Reed left the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, turning the ball over to Tita. The senior held the Chargers scoreless and the game remained tied 3-3. Both teams failed to score in the ninth. After two quick outs to start tenth, Roman continued his hot hitting with his third hit of the day, a bomb triple, splitting the left-center field gap. Czel stepped up next and had a great at bat fouling off pitch after pitch before delivering an opposite field two-strike single to score Roman for a 4-3 NHS lead.
Ansonia clawed its way back with a leadoff walk, a stolen base and after a sharp single up the middle that Newtown shortstop Evan Noonan almost made a great play on, Ansonia had runners on the corners with no outs. Tita induced a double play ball turned nicely by junior John Hull and Noonan. The runner came home from third to knot the score.
In the top of the 11th inning, Chris Tenney contributed one of his three hits on the day and, after a perfect bunt by Mike Allwein, the table was set for Noonan, who hit the first pitch he saw to the wall in right field and used his tremendous speed to complete a two-run inside the park home run.
Ansonia battled back in the bottom of the 11th and used two RBI doubles to tie the score at 6. Haylon got the final two outs of the inning, and again the Nighthawk offense would not stop. In the 12th, Roman had a long leadoff double. Packer then contributed an RBI single. After an Ansonia error, Allwein delivered a two-strike run-scoring hit to make it 8-6. Haylon dominated the bottom of the 12th inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced to end the marathon of a game.
Brookfield 2, Newtown 1: Haylon, as he went six innings, allowing two unearned runs on only four Brookfield hits. Newtown struggled at the plate, mustering only two hits, a single by Czel and a double by Packer. The lone Newtown RBI came on a groundout by Powers.
