“FEATHERS, FLOWERS, TALONS, AND FANGS: POWER AND SERENITY IN JAPANESE NATURE PRINTS” AT RISD;

set 4-12; g/ak; # 696222

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) will show “Feathers, Flowers, Talons and Fangs: Power and Serenity in Japanese Nature Prints,” at RISD’s Design Museum through June 10. This exhibition brings fresh attention to bird and flower subjects (kachoga), a seldom-studied category of Japanese woodblock printing (ukiyo-e), commonly known as “pictures of the floating world.”

Drawn from a group of about 720 outstanding but little-known Japanese prints given to the RISD Museum by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller in 1934–38, approximately 70 examples are now on view. The depth and scope of RISD’s holdings span the development of kachoga during the Edo period (1603–1867). Their lush visual content enriches our current understanding of ukiyo-e.

RISD is at 224 Benefit Street. For more information, www.risdmuseum.org or 401-454-6500.
