WOMEN IN ART FROM 1945 TO 2000 MAXWELL DAVIDSON TO JUNE 1
ak/gs set 4-23 #697032
NEW YORK CITY â The Maxwell Davidson gallery is showing âThe Painted Lady: Women in Art from 1945 to 2000â through June 1.
âThe Painted Ladyâ is a survey of various ways that women have been depicted as subjects in American art since World War II. Fittingly, the title references a species of butterfly by the same name, which is known for its beauty, adaptability and existence on all continents.
âThe Painted Ladyâ begins chronologically in the 1950s with Milton Averyâs âNudeâ and finishes with Michaël Borremansâ âThe Ulcer.â The 1960s are strongly represented. Echoing the times, male artists such as Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Peter Blake and Richard Pettibone, who were all central to depicting the evolving societal image of women, all have examples of work on view in the exhibition.
While these artists continued their representation of women through the 1970s and 80s, the last two decades have blossomed with some of the most important and diverse depictions of women to date. Included in the exhibitions are works by Sam Samore and others. In these years, women have become the leading creators of their own images, lending their works a more concise and introspective viewpoint. Among them are Elizabeth Peyton and Cindy Sherman.
The Maxwell & Davidson Gallery is at 724 Fifth Avenue (between 56th and 57th Streets). For information, www.davidsongallery.com or 212-759-7555.
