Set 4-12 g/ak; #696222
PROVIDENCE, R.I. â The Rhode Island School of Design Museum is showing âNuance in Nature: Birds and Flowers in Japanese Textile Design,â through Sunday, June 17. Japanese textile design successfully integrates abstract and figurative elements, resulting in dynamically graphic patterns and powerful imagery.
Running in conjunction with the exhibition, âFeathers, Flowers, Talons and Fangs,â the subject of birds and flowers is presented in a variety of stylistic treatments. Selections include kimono, domestic textiles such as tenugi (towels), cushion covers, fukusa (gift wrappers), designs worked out on paper and exquisitely rendered and carved mulberry-paper stencils for patterning cloth, all from the museumâs permanent collection.
RISD is at 224 Benefit Street. For more information, www.risdmuseum.org or 401-454-6500.
