Hooked On Fishing On Opening Day
Hooked On Fishing On Opening Day
By Kendra Bobowick
Invisible except for water dripping from nylon thread, fishing lines reached below the surface at Taunton Pond on opening day of fishing season, Saturday, April 17.
Standing shoulder to shoulder were Charlie Stock and John Payne, both impressed with the trout dangling on a hook, while behind them the clouds stared down at their reflection on one of Newtownâs popular fishing shores.
Lining the waterâs edge were a mix of anglers old and new who took advantage of a mild opening day and fish eager for the hook. Stepping down the slope for a boat launch, Charlie swirled his catches back and forth from their chain.
Nearby was 4-year-old Eric Unger, who stared with surprise at his first catch. Just a few yards away was Jerry DeJulia, who had the day off as an umpire. He was rapidly pulling his own catches from the water.
One small boat skimmed the pondâs surface in the distance as the fishing season began in Newtown with gentle tugs on the line and the sounds of fish splashing as thin lines reeled them in.
