Police Reports, April 12 - 20, 2015

Multiple Charges

Police said they received a complaint from a person on Sugar Street concerning erratic driving, so they investigated and located the vehicle in question at about 10 am on April 16.

Police said they stopped motorist Matthew Rieve, 25, of Bethel near 11 Queen Street and then learned that there was an outstanding warrant against him for failure to pay a fine or to plead not guilty to a past marijuana possession charge, which had been lodged against him by state police from Troop A. Consequently, Newtown police charged Rieve with failure to respond to an infraction.

In connection with the erratic driving complaint, police charged Rieve with failure to keep to the right.

Additionally, police arrested Rieve on charges of possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics not in their original prescription container, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

After processing the charges, police released Rieve on $5,150 bail for an April 29 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

DUI Charge

Police said that at about 5:10 pm on April 16 they received multiple calls about a motor vehicle accident that had occurred on Wasserman Way at its intersection with the Exit 11 ramps of Interstate 84.

Police said motorist Cheryl Hodgdon, 53, of Croydon, N.H., was attempting to make a right turn from the Exit 11 off-ramp onto eastbound Wasserman Way, when the vehicle that Hodgdon was driving crossed the centerline of Wasserman Way and struck a westbound vehicle that was waiting at a traffic signal.

There were no injuries. Police investigated and then charged Hodgdon with driving under the influence and with making a restricted turn.

Police held Hodgdon on $500 bail for an April 17 court appearance. Hodgdon did not enter a plea in court. She was released on $250 bail for a May 8 court appearance.

DUI Incident

At about 9:45 am on April 18, motorist Brittney Stout, 26, of Brookfield, who was driving a Volkswagen Passat sedan northward on South Main Street, near its intersection with Ethan Allen Road, struck the rear end of a northbound Honda Pilot SUV, police said.

There were no injuries. After investigating, police charged Stout with driving under the influence, failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

After processing, police released Stout on $500 bail for a May 5 court appearance.

Intersection Crash

A two-vehicle accident concurred at the intersection of New Lebbon Road and Marlin Road about 6:10 pm on April 8, police said.

The collision involved George Delia, 21, of 19 Mt Nebo Road, who was riding a 2011 KTM 250-SX lightweight motocross-style dirtbike motorcycle, and motorist Kathleen Torreso, 44, of 72 Marlin Road, who was driving a 2015 Kia Sorento SUV, police report.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Delia an infraction on charges of driving an unregistered all-terrain vehicle and failure of an all-terrain vehicle to yield the right of way.

DUI Case

Police said that late on the afternoon of April 19, they received a complaint concerning a motorist in a vehicle parked at the Botsford Drive-In at 282 South Main Street who was possibly intoxicated, so they went there to investigate.

Police said they located motorist Peter Russell, 64, of Bridgeport and investigated, charging him with driving under the influence. Russell was released on $200 bail for a May 5 court appearance, police said.

Berkshire Accident

Motorist Justine Hawkins, 17, of 261 Berkshire Road was driving a 1998 Cadillac Seville sedan eastward on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Great Quarter Road, at about 10:45 pm on April 18, when the Cadillac was struck from behind by eastbound motorist Christopher Lindquist, 18, of Monroe, who was driving a 2003 Acura RSX two-door hatchback, police report.

There were no injuries. Sandy Hook firefighters responded to the scene. Police said they issued Lindquist a written warning for following too closely.

Interstate Collision

State police said motorist Perry Pavlou, 37, of Trumbull was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima sedan eastward on Interstate 84 about 5:14 pm on April 19, when he lost control of the auto and drove off the left road shoulder, striking some guardrailing.

The vehicle then crossed back over the roadway and came to rest on turf alongside the right road shoulder, state police said. State police said they warned Pavlou for failure to maintain position in the established lane.

SUV Vs Truck

On eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, at about 5:14 pm on April 16, motorist Gerald Nathanson, 66, of Middlebury, who was driving a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, struck the rear end of a 2005 Nissan Titan pickup truck driven by Christopher Belair, 34, of Waterbury, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said they issued Nathanson an infraction for following too closely.

Theft From Vehicle

Police report that sometime between 9 pm on April 19, and 10:15 am on April 20, someone used a rock to break open a passenger-side window on a locked 2006 Honda Element SUV, which was parked on Mountain Laurel Lane.

The thief then stole a handbag from the vehicle’s center console, police said. Police are investigating the crime and ask anyone with knowledge of it to contact them at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.

Theft From Store

Police said that they received a report from the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at about 2:30 pm on April 19 concerning a shoplifting theft that had occurred at the store on April 6.

The suspect had stolen some breathing aids from the store valued at approximately $300, police said. The suspect had left the premises on April 6 driving a dark-colored Volkswagen, which was either a Paasat or a Jetta, police said. Police ask anyone with information on the case to contact them.

Park Vandalism

Police are investigating vandalism that occurred at Dickinson Park at 50 Elm Drive sometime between 8 am and 9 pm on April 19. The vandalism included some spray-painted graffiti, which will cost several hundred dollars to clean, police said. Police ask anyone with information on the crime to contact them.

Botsford Vandalism

Sometime between 2 and 9 am on April 19, someone vandalized an Abbey Lane residential property by breaking a window on a garage, police said. Abbey Lane is a dead-end street that extends from South Main Street. Police are investigating.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for him, Nicholas Szustecki, 28, of Waterbury went to the police station about 7 pm on April 20 and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, police said.

Szustecki originally was charged last December 24 with four motor vehicle violations in connection with a three-vehicle accident in Botsford. He failed to show up in court on January 30, resulting in the warrant being issued, police said.

Following processing, police released him on $25,000 bail for a May 5 court appearance.

Warrant Case

After learning that there was a warrant for her arrest, Ashby Dickinson, 44, of Bridgeport went to the Newtown police station about 6:50 pm on April 20 and was charged with violation of probation stemming from an Easton incident, Newtown police said.

Police released her on $10,000 bail for a May 5 appearance in Bridgeport Superior Court.

Berkshire Collision

Police report that at about 7:10 am on April 20, motorist Samantha Pavlicek, 18, of 14 Serene Way, who was driving a 2013 Jaguar XF sedan eastward on Berkshire Road, stopped for traffic conditions, after which the Jaguar was struck from behind by eastbound motorist Sarah Bender, 16, of 47 Farrell Road, who was driving a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Bender a written warning for following too closely.

Queen Street Lot

Police said that at about 5:10 pm on April 12, motorist Janet Sabilia, 38, of Kingston, N.Y., who was driving a 2000 Dodge minivan, was backing out of a parking space at the commercial parking lot at 6 Queen Street, when the Dodge struck a passing 2013 Infiniti G-37 convertible driven by Judith Kennedy, 54, of 12 Rose Lane.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Sandy Hook Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred during wet conditions about 2 pm on April 7 on eastbound Berkshire Road, just west of the traffic signal at the intersection of Berkshire Road and Toddy Hill Road, police said.

Police said motorist Glenn Archer, 55, of West Haven, who was driving a 1996 Honda Accord sedan, struck the rear end of a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV driven by Christopher Chiappetta, 23, of Gaylordsville.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Archer for following too closely.
