âWALK AT WAM: ALEXANDER ROSSâ ON VIEW AT WORCESTER ART MUSEUM w/1 cut
avv/gs set 4-24 #697253
WORCESTER, MASS. â The Worcester Art Museum presents the newest installation of the Contemporary Wall Project in the Renaissance Court. âWall at WAM: Alexander Rossâ is on view through spring 2008.
Increasingly since his first solo exhibit in New York in 1998, Ross is recognized as new voice in the dialogue exploring the possibilities of a synthesis of abstraction and representation.
Crafted with detail yet purposefully unidentifiable, Rossâ enigmatic imagery morphs between the organic and the artificial, the tangible and the imaginary, all the while refusing to settle neatly into any category. He cites current trends in biotechnology, material science, artificial life and microbiology as some of the influences behind his images.
Known for paintings that are hybrid in nature, Ross has produced a project for the museumâs âWall at WAMâ series that adapts his imagery and technique for the challenges of the second story setting and grand scale (67 feet wide) of the Renaissance Court.
The result, incorporating disorienting shifts in scale (evocative of the micro- and macrocosms of the natural world) is generated digitally. The imagery started as a 14½-inch model sculpted in jade-colored clay, followed by an ink and crayon drawing.
Born in Denver, Ross studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and now divides his time between New York City and the Berkshires, Mass. He has exhibited regularly throughout the United States and in Europe, Canada, and Mexico since 1998.
Recent group exhibitions include âRemote Viewing,â Whitney Museum of American Art, 2005; âDisparities and Deformations, Our Grotesque,â SITE Santa Fe, 2004; and âGreater New York,â PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, 2002. The artist is represented in New York by Marianne Boesky Gallery.
The museum is at 55 Salisbury Street. For information, www.worcesterart.org or 508-799-4406.
