To Speak At Garden Club Meeting
The next meeting of The Garden Club of Newtown will feature Polly Brody reading selections from her poetry in her program âIn Praise of Natureâ on Tuesday, April 28, at 1 pm, in the Olga Knoepke Memorial Room of Cyrenius H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown.
A former resident of Newtown who currently lives in Southbury, Polly Brody is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and earned a masterâs degree from Southern Connecticut State University in biology. She has traveled extensively in Europe, East Africa, Australia and South America following her passion for bird watching.
A biologist and experienced field ornithologist, she lectures and has created seminars on animal behavior.
Ms Brody has long been an active advocate for the environment and when she was chairman of Newtown Conservation Commission she helped to preserve the 790 acres in Newtown that is now known as the Upper Paugussett State Forest.
As a writer, she has had three collections of poetry published: Other Nations (1999), The Burning Bush (Antrim House, 2005) and At the Flowerâs Lip, a chapbook of passionate poetry (Antrim House, 2007) and is currently at work on her fourth book . The Burning Bush and At the Flowerâs Lip are still in print and will be available for purchase during the garden club program.
Ms Brody is currently at work on her fourth book.
Ms Brody has twice received the Winchell Award from the Connecticut Poetry Society and received the 2005 Poetry Prize from The Connecticut River Review. She placed third in the Friends of Acadia National Competition in 2006 and was a finalist in the New Millennium Writing Competition. Her writing has appeared in many publications.
