Relay For Life Organizers Excited About New Location

Because of anticipated construction traffic and possible work being done on the high school football stadium, Newtown’s Relay For Life — the awareness and fundraising benefit for the American Cancer Society — is relocating to Fairfield Hills. The new location is approximately one mile from the high school.

The move to a new venue also reflects the growth Relay For Life of Newtown has experienced over the past several years. Fairfield Hills will offer a more spacious venue for the overnight community celebration to raise cancer survivors’ spirits, community awareness, and much needed funds for cancer support programs and research.

Carl Samuelson, logistics chair, said Relay organizers were fortunate to find a new location that is the geographic heart of Newtown.

“We really wanted to limit the impact the relocation could have to the community, supporters, and volunteers,” he said.

Necole Salvesen, event chair, said Mr Samuelson and his committee did an amazing job of planning and coordinating the logistics of the venue change.

“He even drafted blueprints and spec drawings,” Ms Salvesen said. “Our new location will help us continue to evolve the Relay For Life event and keep pace with the growth in participation the Newtown Community has experienced over the past five years.”

Ms Salvesen additionally recognized the Fairfield Hills Authority, including Dr John Reed; Maria DeMarco, who is coordinating on campus logistics for the authority; Newtown Public Works Director Fred Hurley; and many others who supported making the venue change.

“Former and current cancer patients, those who have lost a loved one to cancer, families, businesses, civic organizations, and the public are invited to take part in this exciting team event at our new location,” said Helen Benson, finance chair. “Teams of cancer fighting enthusiasts will gather at Fairfield Hills on June 13 to show their support and dedication.”
