Girls' Lacrosse Team Rebounds From First Loss
Locked up in a tight battle at Blue & Gold Stadium on April 17, Newtown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team pulled away in the second half for a 15-9 triumph over Weston.
Newtown led just 8-7 after Weston logged two of the first three second-half goals before the Nighthawks went on a 7-2 run in the final 20 minutes of action.
Kristie Vos Winkel had seven goals to lead the charge, and Carley Ferris notched four goals and had two assists. Emily Maher scored once and assisted on a trio of goals, Meaghan Brophy had a goal and two assists, Julia Sughrue and Nevan Gattey scored, and Noelle Benson added an assist. Cassie Ekstrom and Anna Northrop both scooped six ground balls. Goaltenders Kyle Dandrea (two saves) and Tess Baldino (one stop) both played a half.
Newtown was coming off its first loss of the season, a 12-4 setback to nonconference foe Glastonbury the day before. Brophy, Vos Winkel, Ferris, and Brianna Sclafani all scored.
The Nighthawks improved to 5-1 overall with a 15-6 win over visiting Lauralton Hall of Milford at Treadwell Park on April 21.
Ferris had a double hat-trick performance, leading the offensive show with six net-finders. Vos Winkel had three goals, Brophy had two goals and three assists, and Maher had a four-point effort with two goals and two helpers. Dandrea denied six of ten shots in 40 minutes of action before Baldino came in to help finish off the win.
