Newtown High School’s baseball team, in its sixth game of the spring, picked up its first win — toppling host Oxford 15-9 on April 21.

The teams combined for 30 hits (15 apiece) and eight errors in a wild contest that featured eight opening-inning runs.

Newtown carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the first, but trailed 5-3 heading into the second inning. Oxford led 7-4 going to the fourth, but Newtown put up six runs to turn a three-run deficit into a three-run advantage, and never looked back.

“It is great for our squad to get our first win. I would be very surprised if any teams in our conference work as hard as we do and it was great for us to come out on top Monday. We still need to work on the little things — getting ahead of hitters, playing consistent defense, and working on our base running,” Newtown Coach Matt Memoli said. “We have a lot of work left to do but feel good after the win today.”

Greg Hennessey had four hits and drove in two runs, Virgil Procaccini knocked in four runs, Sam Czel had three hits, Garrison Buzzanca and Austin Raftery both had two hits, and David Matthews had a hit, three walks, and three runs scored.

Newtown fell 7-2 to visiting Staples of Westport on April 19, and fell 9-4 to visiting Weston two days earlier. In the loss to Staples, Buzzanca had two hits and a run batted in, and Nick Lotrecchiano drove in a run. Against Weston, Procaccini had three hits and an RBI, Raftery had a hit and knocked in a run, Hennessey had a hit and an RBI, and Jaret DeVellis and Czel both had a pair of hits.
