Chain Reaction

A three-vehicle chain-reaction accident occurred in stopped traffic near 75 South Main Street about 7:25 am on April 14. All vehicles were traveling southward.

Police said motorist Timothy Hendrie, 57, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2007 BMW-XIC coupe, struck the rear end of a 2012 Nisan Altima sedan driven by Jill Brooks, 27, of Danbury, pushing the Nissan into the rear end of a 1996 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by Nafi Biba, 54, of Danbury.

There were no injuries. Hendrie received a written warning for following too closely, police report.

Asleep At The Wheel

State police said motorist David Maresca, 57, of Marshalls Creek, Penn., was driving a 1998 Dodge auto eastward on Interstate 84, about 1,000 feet west of Exit 11, at about 3:30 am on April 15, when he fell asleep at the wheel, resulting in the vehicle drifting to the left and striking about 250 feet of guardcabling on the median.

Maresca was not injured. State police verbally warned him for failure to drive in the established lane.

Interstate Accident

At about 2:37 am on April 16, motorist Francisco Grisales, 45, of Dover, N.J., who was driving a 2001 Toyota Corolla westward on Interstate 84, about 500 feet east of Exit 9, applied his brakes because a nearby vehicle had gone into a skid, state police said.

The Toyota then spun out of control and landed on the median, state police said. Grisales was not injured. Grisales received a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions, according to state police.

Honda Rolls Away

Police said they received a report about 8:20 pm on April 16 that an unoccupied 2004 Honda Pilot SUV, which a motorist had parked at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street, had been left in gear, after which the Honda rolled forward in the parking lot and struck some wooden pillars.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

South Main Crash

Police said that at about 2:08 pm on April 17, motorist Louis Cuomo, 87, of 60 Taunton Lake Road, who was driving a 2009 Subaru Outback SUV, stopped at a stop sign on Ethan Allen Road at its intersection with South Main Street in preparing to turn left onto southbound South Main Street.

At that time, motorist Sarah Liska, 21, of 112 Hanover Road, who was driving a 1988 Plymouth Sundance sedan, was approaching the intersection, police said.

In attempting to make the left turn, the Subaru drove into the path of the oncoming Plymouth, resulting in a collision, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Cuomo a written warning for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.

Highway Crash

State police said motorist Barbara Granato, 55, of Connecticut, who was driving a 2005 Honda Civic westward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, lost control of the vehicle about 3:30 pm on April 17 and then struck about 30 feet of metallic flex-beam guardrailing.

Granato reported a bump on the head, but refused medical attention, state police said. State police said they issued her an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane, failure to carry a driver’s license, failure to carry a vehicle registration, and failure to carry an automotive insurance identification card.

Sugar Street Crash

At about 5:40 pm on April 17, motorist Aaron Gattinoni, 17, of 3 Abbey Lane was driving a 2011 Honda Pilot SUV eastward on Sugar Street behind eastbound motorist Stacey Macchia, 41, of Redding, who was driving a 2009 Nissan Murano SUV, according to police.

The Nissan stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by the Honda near 144 Sugar Street, police report.

There were no injuries. Police issued Gattinoni an infraction for following too closely.

I-84 Collision

State police report a three-vehicle accident on eastbound Interstate 84, about 100 yards east of Exit 9, about 7 pm on April 17.

State police said motorist Olivia Zaleski, 22, of Newington, who was driving a 2009 Honda CRV SUV, struck the rear end of a 2003 Toyota Corolla, which was driven by Christopher Recklet, 30, Shelton, pushing the Corolla into the rear end of a 2000 Toyota Camry, which was driven by Mary Lester, 21, of Santa Ana, Calif.

There were no injuries. Zaleski received an infraction for following too closely, state police said.

Burglary/Larceny

Sometime between 9:30 and 11 am on April 18, someone illegally entered a home on Crown Hill Drive and stole a diamond pendant and a Toshiba-brand laptop computer, police said. Crown Hill Drive is a dead-end street that extends from Paugussett Road in Sandy Hook.

Police ask any witnesses to suspicious activity in that area at that time or anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact them at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203 426-5841.

DUI Incident

Newtown police said they received several calls about 5:15 pm on April 18, reporting that a motorist was driving erratically southward on South Main Street, so they went to the area to investigate.

Newtown police said they attempted to stop motorist Gregg Chopskie, 46, of Monroe in Newtown, but he drove into Monroe.

About one-half mile into Monroe on Pepper Street, Newtown police stopped Chopskie to investigate.

Newtown police charged Chopskie with driving under the influence and with failure to obey a police officer’s signal to stop.

Following arrest processing, police released Chopskie on $100 bail for a May 6 court appearance.

Vandalism With A Vehicle

Police report that late on the night of April 18, someone who was driving a dark-colored Land Rover SUV drove down Holmes Farm Road and intentionally damaged numerous sections of fencing at a residential property there. The vehicle that was used to vandalize the property would have a damaged headlamp, police said.

Holmes Farm Road is a short dead-end street that extends from the intersection of Hundred Acres Road and Dug Hill Road.

Burglary/Larceny

Police said they learned on the morning on April 19 that two vacant houses near the intersection of South Main Street and Greenbriar Lane, which are for sale, were illegally entered by someone who stole the copper tubing from their heating systems. Thieves sell such copper tubing for its scrap-metal value, police said.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact Officer Steven Borges at the police station.

Collision At Flagpole

At about 11 am on April 19, motorist Stuart Hubbard, 52, of 55 Currituck Road, who was driving a 2011 Ford Explorer SUV northward on Main Street, stopped for traffic at its intersection with Church Hill Road and West Street, according to police.

Northbound motorist Donna Benson, 52, of 12 Founders Lane, who was driving a 2014 Subaru Legacy sedan, then struck the rear end of the Ford, police said.

There were no injuries. Benson received a written warning for following too closely, police said.

Berkshire Road DUI

Police report that at about 8:16 pm on April 19, they spotted motorist Thomas Corderman, 42, of Southbury driving erratically on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Fir Tree Lane, so they stopped him to investigate.

Police said they charged Corderman with driving under the influence, failure to drive to the right, and illegal use of a handheld cellphone while driving.

After processing the charges, police released Corderman on $250 bail for a May 2 court appearance.

South Main DUI

Police said that at about 10:45 pm on April 19, they stopped motorist Theresa Caputo, 61, of Monroe near 154 South Main Street for driving erratically.

After investigating, police charged Caputo with driving under the influence. After processing, Caputo was released on $250 bail for a May 2 court appearance.
