Softball Team Wins Two Of Three
Offensive fireworks were the story in one game, and a low-scoring battle unfolded in another as Newtown High School’s softball team split a pair of games this past week. The Nighthawks toppled visiting Weston 14-1 on April 17, then fell 2-1 at Oxford on April 21 to carry a 3-3 overall mark into an April 23 clash with Joel Barlow of Redding. Newtown defeated Barlow 8-3 (read about the game in the May 2 print edition of The Bee).
Against Weston, pitcher Gillian Galante struck out seven, walked three, and received plenty of support from the hitters. Jill Lasorsa was 3-for-3, including a triple, with a pair of runs batted in and four runs scored. Kayla O’Grady went 2-for-3, including a triple, and drove in four runs. Emily Woznick was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Kate Laaksonen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Haley Ryan walked three times and drove in two runs on bases loaded walks.
In the Oxford game, Mikayla Kuligowski gave Newtown a 1-0 lead with a double that plated Megan Goyda, who had singled. Oxford battled back despite a strong effort from Newtown pitcher Lauren Wilcox who allowed five hits, struck out five batters, and issued three walks.
Newtown is scheduled to visit Immaculate of Danbury on Saturday, April 26, and will return home for two games against Pomperaug on Monday, April 28 (5 and 7 pm), both at Treadwell Park.
After visits to New Fairfield on April 30 and Bunnell of Stratford on May 2 (both at 4:15 pm) the Nighthawks return home to play Masuk of Monroe on May 7 (7 pm at Treadwell Park).
