Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ track and field teams got the spring season underway with meets earlier this week.

The girls defeated three opponents in their season opener, at Blue & Gold Stadium on April 21. The boys visited Pomperaug of Southbury on April 22 and picked up a pair of wins against three opponents.

Pole Vault: 1. Calandro 12-0.

Javelin: 2. Michaela Nowacki 102-11.

Discus: 1. Nowacki 107-5, 3. Amy Anyoha 87-5, 5. Hannah Delia 59-2.

Shot Put: 2. Anyoha 33-9, 4. Nowacki 28-2, 5. Carlin Cohane 22-11.

Boys

Newtown beat Oxford 79-60 and Immaculate 122-22, and fell to Pomperaug 88.5-60.5.

The 4x100 relay team of Tristian Pears, Gus Porto, Cole Terry, and Matthew Mossbarger finished first overall and qualified for Double L State Championships with a time of 45.0

The 4x800 team of Ethan Burg, David Csordas, Christopher Gamble, and Wesley Morlock finished first overall and qualified for Double L State Championships with a time of 8:49.75.

George Ferris and Cole Terry both finished in the top three of the 110 hurdles with times of 18.2 and 18.4 respectively.

Mossbarger and Will Roman paced the Nighthawks in the 100 dash, each running with times of 12.0.

Ethan Burg finished in the top three of the 1600 with a time of 4:53.48. Christopher Gamble ran well with a 4:59.

In the 300 hurdles, Boland qualified for the SWC championships with a time of 44.9.

In the 800, Csordas paced the Nighthawks with a time of 2:13.36.

In the 200, Mossbarger led the Nighthawks with a time of 24.3 which qualifies him for the SWC championships.

Nate Steinebrey led the Nighthawks in the 3200 with a time of 10:57.

In the 4x400 relay, the team of Kevin Arther, Boland, Morlock, and Mossbarger ran a time of 3:49.87.

In the triple jump, Kevin Gorman scored points with his personal record of 35-2.

Pole Vault was led by Porto with a height of 9 feet, followed by Terry and Scott Martin at 8-6.

Mark Dowling finished first in the javelin with a distance of 125 feet.

Jack Godfrey and Eli Klocyzk scored points with throws of 38-7 in the shot put event.

Andy Braun paced Newtown with a discuss throw of 95-6.

Tom Brant, coach of the boys, was pleased with his team’s efforts.

“It is a step in the right direction. We had break last week and kids were all over the country and all over the globe actually,” said Brant, referring to class trips during spring break. “The fact that we came out and ran the times that we did is a strong statement that we have the potential to be a very good team. We have some injuries right now that are hampering our sprinters and we need to get them healthy. The throwers were simply amazing today. They carried us today and I’m really proud of the improvement they have made already this season.”
