EARLY CABINETMAKING WOODS WORKSHOP AT STANLEY WHITMAN MUSEUM JUNE 6

avv/gs set 4-25 #697540

FARMINGTON, CONN. — A one-day workshop, “Identification of Historical Cabinetmaking Woods” will take place on Wednesday, June 6, at the Stanley Whitman Museum.

Furniture conservator and Accredited Senior Appraiser for the American Society of Appraisers, Nickolas Kotula, ASA, will conduct this intensive hands-on workshop.

In private practice since 1972, Kotula’s clients include museums, private collectors, historical societies and insurance companies. He has conducted many workshops on wood identification nationwide for individual chapters of the American Society of Appraisers, museums, as well as interested individuals.

Participants are asked to bring several wood samples to be analyzed in class as well as several pieces of furniture (or parts, such as a drawer) to be studied for clues of period, region, repairs or any faking.

The ability to accurately identify furniture woods is a skill that those involved with antique furniture need to develop in order to determine the period and region of a specific piece of furniture, as well as to identify traces of previous repairs, or any evidence of faking.

This full-day workshop is designed to familiarize participants with the basic methods and skills necessary to identify, in a professional manner, woods commonly used in antique furniture.

Early registration is suggested, as the number of participants per day has been deliberately kept to ten to insure each participant will get the most from this intensive hands-on workshop. The cost is $300.
