Snapshot: Janelle Gagne
Occupation: I’m a surgical physician assistant with the Hospital of Central Connecticut, in New Britain.
Family: My husband Roy is a lieutenant in the Norwalk fire department. We have three children. Mitchell is 3 years old, and we have twins who will be 1 year old on April 29. We now have an au pair living with us, Hanna, who helps us take care of everyone.
Pets: We have a cocker spaniel named Sugar. She’s 4 years old.
How long have you lived in Newtown? We moved here two years ago. I grew up in Danbury, and my husband in Norwalk and Southbury. We have family in Bethel and Southbury, so Newtown was a good place.
What do you like to do in your free time? Well, free time hardly exists. But we are big into traveling and cooking, especially before we had kids. I do some reading. I listen to books on tape on my way to work. We go to CrossFit RedZone in Newtown and are pretty active there.
What book are you listening to now? I’m actually listening to Twilight, and I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I’ve been to Thailand a couple of times and love it. I love the people, the culture, and the food. It’s just beautiful. I’d love to take my husband there one day. We do plan to go on a safari in Kenya for our 40th birthdays, in about five years, as a gift to each other.
What is the best thing about Newtown? I like how it feels like a small town. It’s very New England. Every morning going to work, and every evening coming home, I love seeing the flagpole. We got married at the Meeting House and had photos taken in Ram Pasture, on the stone bridge. So seeing all of those things always reminds me of our wedding day.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? My father is always a positive influence. He has supported me to make decisions that made me happy, not him. He’s a very kind, patient, and giving person, and has shared his values with me.
Do you have a personal philosophy? What does not kill us makes us stronger. Once we had the twins, we have really lived by that!
Do you have a guilty pleasure? The traveling. When I was young and single, about every month I’d go on a trip, including about six times a year internationally. My friend and I would find deals online. Now it’s an indulgence to travel to the grocery store! I do hope to get back to traveling again.
