Boys’ Volleyball Team Posts Victories
Newtown High School’s boys’ volleyball team defeated both Amity of Woodbridge and Danbury 3-0 in road matches April 17 and 19, then topped Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport 3-1 at home on April 21 before going to Ridgefield for a four-set victory the next night.
In the win over Amity, the Hawks posted set scores of 25-15, 25-21, 25-21. Noel McLeod had ten kills, 13 digs, and a pair of aces; A.J. Zatulskis logged nine kills, three digs, and four aces; Nate Twitchell recorded eight kills, eight digs, and two aces; Eli Sullivan racked up 17 digs; Dima Franza had 27 assists, nine digs, and an ace; Kade Dearney had eight digs and two aces; and Warner Bacon logged five kills.
Against Danbury, in a rematch of an earlier April competition, the outcome was the same with another three-setter; the scores were 25-15, 25-20, 25-8. McLeod registered 15 digs, seven kills, and a trio of aces; Twitchell had 20 kills, six digs, and an ace; Sullivan had 17 digs; Franza 11 digs; Dearney recorded ten digs, three kills, 25 assists, and two aces; Bacon had six kills and six digs; and Zatulskis had three digs, two kills, and a pair of aces.
In the win over Kolbe NHS won a close first set that went extra points before the Hawks prevailed 28-26. Newtown then won 25-15, lost 15-25, and put thing away with a 25-13 victory. Franza racked up 35 assists to go along with six digs and a pair of aces; Twitchell had 16 kills; Bacon logged seven kills and 12 digs; McLeod had nine kills and 11 digs; Sullivan compiled 24 digs; Dearney had 13 digs; and Zatulskis had five digs.
Things were tight throughout against Ridgefield; set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, and 25-22. McLeod had nine kills and 15 digs; Bacon had eight kills and seven digs; Cole Sgagliardich registered seven kills and four aces; Zatulskis recorded six kills and 18 digs; Sullivan had 14 digs; Twitchell had 13 digs and two aces, and Franza logged 11 digs.
