Alison Makuch Is Playing Lili—

Brookfield Production Of ‘Carnival!’ Will Feature Plenty Of Familiar Faces

BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield Theatre for the Arts is in rehearsals for the second show of its 2007 season.

Carnival!, with music and lyrics by Bob Merrill, book by Michael Stewart, and being directed by Maureen Trotto, is a touching musical from which originated the unforgettable tune “Love Makes the World Go Round.”

The story (not to be mistaken with another poignant musical with a similar name, Carousel) is the perfect blend of comedy and tragedy, ideal for matinee audiences and Saturday night sophisticates alike. Carnival! is the story of Lili (being played in Brookfield by Allyson Makuch of Newtown), a lonely orphan enchanted by the desire to join the lively and glamorous carnival. The troupe, touring the small cities of France about a generation ago, is raffish and run-down, but Lili is nonetheless dazzled by their spirited and colorful excitement.

Caught in a love triangle between the troupe’s suave and gallant magician, Marco the Magnificent (Tim Walsh, of Danbury), and Paul Berthalet (Joe Efferen, from Carmel, N.Y.), a puppeteer with an injured leg, Lili is forced to choose between the lover who is beguiling and the lover who is true.

Additional Newtown and Sandy Hook residents in this production include Joel Romanelli as Jacquot, Dan Berlingeri, Jeff Bray and Zach Gordon as Roustabouts, and Jackie Hoolehan and Maggie Hoolehan as Siamese Twins (as well as members of the chorus). Alison Kron is playing an Acrobat, and also singing in the chorus.

Chorus members also include Zoe DeStories, Megan Gonzales, Katie McMorran, and KumKum Modwel.

Joanne Archibald of Danbury is serving as musical director, Bill Posidento of New Milford is the producer, and Stephanie Skrok of Washington is producer and stage manager.

Carnival! opens May 4 and will continue through May 19, Friday and Saturdays at 8 pm (note: the May 5 is sold out). The Sunday matinee for this production will be May 6 at 2 pm. General admission for all seats is $20. Reservations are requested by calling 775-0023.

Dinner and Show Package are available for $45. Cost includes dinner at Bailey’s Backyard of Brookfield (glass of wine, salad, three choices for entree, dessert and coffee) and a ticket to the show. Reservations are made through the TBTA box office 775-0023 by asking for the Dinner & Show Package.

The playhouse is in Brookfield Center on Route 25, behind Brookfield Library. For more information visit BrookfieldPlayhouse.org.

The 2007 season at Brookfield Theatre for the Arts marks the 50th season at the playhouse. After Carnival!, upcoming productions will include Seussical, July 13-28; and My Fat Friend, September 28-October 13.
