The weather warmed up this week and so did the action at Newtown High School.
The softball team extended its winning streak to seven games, recording a thrilling, 3-2, win over Trumbull after out-scoring four other opponents 50-0. The baseball team ran its winning streak to four before finally succumbing to New Fairfield while the girlsâ lacrosse team notched two wins following a stunning, last-second loss to Glastonbury.
The tennis teams returned to the court following the April vacation and both recorded wins over Notre Dame while the golfers pounded Stratford at Mill River Country Club. The tracks teams also enjoyed a lot of success in tri-meet action.
And the boysâ lacrosse team snapped a five-game losing streak with a convincing win over South-West Conference rival, Masuk.

After scoring 50 runs and registering four consecutive shutouts, there are some who may have been worried that the Newtown High School softball team wouldnât be prepared for when the competition got tougher.
Well, lay that worry to rest.
After shutting out Joel Barlow (7-0), New Fairfield (10-0), Weston (10-0) and Kolbe Cathedral (23-0), the Lady Nighthawks squared off Tuesday against an undefeated Trumbull team and pulled off a thrilling 3-2 win to improve to 8-1 overall.
In a 2-2 game, Sam Ciaccia led off the top of the seventh with a single, advanced to second on a perfect sacrifice by Melissa Fracker, and then scored the game winner as she stole third and raced home on a throwing error.
Sophomore pitcher Jenna Legros improved to 6-1 as she scattered three hits, walked one and struck out two.
The âHawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out, RBI-single by Kelley Tenney. Trumbull took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, but the âHawks evened things in the top of the fourth when Tenney walked and later scored on an error.
Freshman Kate Bowen â hitting a gaudy .469 on the year with 10 RBI â doubled twice in three trips to the plate to pace the offense.
The locals tried to extend their seven-game winning streak this week when they hosted Notre Dame on Thursday. They will head to Bethel on Monday and return home next Wednesday to host Immaculate before heading to New Milford on Thursday.
In the win over Joel Barlow last week, Legros fired a three-hitter and helped herself with a pair of knocks, a single and a double. Caitlin Cosgrove tripled in a run and pinch-hitter Ashley Kulikowski singled in a run.
Against new Fairfield, Stacy Broughton took to the circle and recorded the complete-game win, a three-hitter that saw her whiff nine batters. Bowen tripled, singled and drove in two runs while Nora Lynn Shimko, Legros and Tenney each collected a pair of hits. Meanwhile, Cosgrove, Joanna Barry and Katie Schmidt all doubled.
Against Weston, Legros and Mariale Renna combined for the win, limiting the Lady Trojans to five hits along the way. Shimko doubled and tripled, Schmidt tripled and drove in two runs, Barry tripled, Cosgrove doubled and Ciaccia collected two hits and drove in two runs.
Against Kolbe, Schmidt went 4-for-4 with a home run, double and five RBI. Legros also smashed a homer while Kulikowski collected a pair of hits. Renna got the start and fired a one-hitter with nine strikeouts.
As a team, the âHawks are hitting at a .369 clip with 12 doubles, 11 triples and five homers while averaging 8.78 runs per game.

The good times had to end some time and it took four untimely errors and a couple of hit-batsmen to do it.
The Newtown High School baseball team was riding a four-game winning streak heading into Monday afternoon when they hosted rival New Fairfield on the back end of a home-and-home series and saw a 5-1 lead disintegrate in the top of the sixth thanks to a couple of booted balls and some shaky pitching.
Things had been going so well for the Nighthawks, though, after wins against Joel Barlow, Weston and New Fairfield last week. On Monday, sophomore Jake DeVellis made his first varsity start and allowed just one hit into the sixth.
But with two outs, the Rebels collected four consecutive singles to open the floodgates and scored the game-tying run on a hit-batsman. In the top of the seventh, the Rebels scored the eventual game-winner.
Ryan McGrath, who was saddled with the loss, helped spark the offense with a pair of doubles and two RBI while Joe DeVellis added a triple. Senior Seth Hull, though, had the blast of the day when he was sitting on a fast ball, got a curve, and yanked a monstrous home run over the left field fence to drive in a pair.
Sophomore catcher Keith McGrath also drove in a run.
In a 12-1 win over Joel Barlow, the âHawks put together a 13-hit attack with two apiece coming from Joe DeVellis, PJ Cochrane, Ryan McGrath, Tony Galluci and Charlie LoBosco. Nick Urso chipped in with a double. Pitchers Mike Tibbetts and Jake DeVellis combined on a two hitter.
In a 2-1 win over Weston, pitcher Greg Rodden put together another strong outing as he fired five shutout innings and combined with McGrath on a five-hitter. The locals scored both runs in the first inning â one on an RBI single by Hull â and held on for the win. Cochrane helped spark the offense with a double.
In a 4-3 win over New Fairfield, the locals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first only to see the Rebels tie the score in the bottom of the frame. But in the top of the fourth, McGrath â who went the distance on the mound for his second win of the year â singled in Tibbetts with the eventual game-winning run.
NOTE: Through eight games, McGrath leads the âHawks with a .480 average (12-of-25) with three doubles, a triple, a home run and 10 RBI while Cochrane is hitting .458 (11-of-24) with two doubles and a triple. Hull, meanwhile, is hitting .408 with two triples and a homer.

GIRLS LACROSSE
Newtown 12, New Milford 8
Newtown 9, Cheshire 6
Okay, the last-second loss to Glastonbury a little over a week ago was kind of a shocker, but the Newtown High School girlsâ lacrosse team has rebounded quite well from that with wins over New Milford (12-8) and Cheshire (9-6) to improve to 5-1 overall.
Courtney Gleason, Rachel Maley and Betsy Vendel scored three goals apiece to power the Newtown offense in the win over the Green Wave last Thursday at Treadwell Park. Things might have been a little tight early as the Nighthawks held only a 6-5 lead at the half, but the defense stepped it up in the second half.
Jen Greenwood scored a pair of goals and Meghan Bridges added a goal and assist. Gleason notched two assists and Moira Collier registered one. Goaltender Lisa Isabella made 13 saves in the cage.
Against a traditionally tough Cheshire team on Saturday night, Vendel scored five goals while Maley scored two goals with six assists. Gleason had a goal and an assist and Greenwood had a goal. Libby Feltch scooped nine ground balls and caused two key turnovers while Erica Vacaro anchored the defense against a Lady Rams team looking to recover from a 6-5 overtime loss to Branford two days before.
The locals were in Bethel on Thursday and will be in Avon on Saturday for a 10:30 am start. They will remain on the road next Tuesday and Thursday for games against Lauralton Hall and New Milford.

BOYS TENNIS
Newtown 7, Notre Dame 0
After suffering losses to a couple of tough opponents â Weston and Bunnell â prior to the April vacation, the Newtown High School boysâ tennis team returned to the Treadwell Park court on Monday and eased past a undermanned Notre Dame squad.
The Nighthawks improved to 2-2 with a 7-0 win over the Lancers, who were unable to field participants for three individual matches â fourth singles or second and third doubles. But the Lancers did put up a stubborn fight in a couple of the matches they were able to contest.
Mario Roehrs was able to dispatch Dan Barber 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles while Chris Meier stopped Colin Colburn 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Elsewhere, Evan Batzer swept Semaj Hunter 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles while the first doubles team of Timo Roehrs and Peter Manos swept Mark Yaworowski and Dave Gellis 6-0, 6-0.
The âHawks were at Wolfe Park in Monroe on Wednesday to take on Masuk (a team the locals had already topped, 5-2) and hosted New Milford on Thursday before heading out to New Milford on Friday to complete the home-and-home.
The schedule for the locals will remain very busy next week as they will battle Brookfield, Bethel, Immaculate (home) and New Fairfield (home) on four straight days, starting Monday.

BOYS LACROSSE
East Lyme 12, Newtown 5
Newtown 14, Masuk 5
Christian Beitel scored four goals and assisted on another while Brendan Martin scored three goals and assisted on two others as the Newtown High School boysâ lacrosse team snapped a five-game losing streak with a convincing 14-5 win over Masuk on Monday night.
After opening the season with a win over Immaculate, the Nighthawks hit a rough part of the schedule and fell to Brien McMahon, Joel Barlow, Branford, Weston and East Lyme (last Friday). Though the locals averaged 6.2 goals a game in the streak, they allowed 13.8 goals a game to teams currently with a combined record of 23-3 (according to maxpreps.com).
And though Masuk entered the contest with a 5-2 overall mark, the âHawks took control early.
A 5-1 lead at the end of one period ballooned in an 11-4 lead at the half and the locals cruised home from there. Travis Speer and Will Mahony had two goals apiece while Collin Babbage, Kyle OâConnor and Scott Regnery all chipped in a goal. Babbage, Jacob Dauz and Brian Reszoly notched assists while Babbage, Zach DâAgostino, Mahony, Reszoly and Speer combined for 23 ground balls.
Clarence Cheung earned the win with four saves on nine shots.
In a 12-5 loss to East Lyme last Friday, Will Mahony scored four times while Ben Mahony scored once. Brendan and Conor Martin each registered an assists with Ben Mahony and Conor Martin combining for 12 ground balls.
The âHawks will host Norwalk on Saturday at 7 pm and will be in New Milford next Thursday for a 4 pm contest.
NOTE: In last weekâs issue of The Newtown Bee, Ben Mahony was credited with three goals in a loss to Branford when it was, in actuality, Brendan Martin who scored the three goals.
GOLF
Newtown 156, Stratford 216
Thanks to weather and the April vacation it seems like it has been forever (well â 15 days, anyway) since the Newtown High School golf team has been on the course.
But on Tuesday at Mill River Country Club in Stratford, the Nighthawks showed no signs of rust and with three sub-40 rounds, cruised to a 156-216 win to improve to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the South-West Conference.
Stephen Oberstadt earned medallist honors with a 4-over par 38. Billy McCann and Chris McCann carded identical rounds of 5-over par 39 while Pat Daly rounded out the foursome with a 6-over par 40.
Kieran Cuffley led Stratford with a 49.
The âHawks were at Richter Park in Danbury on Wednesday to take on Immaculate and will host Bethel next Tuesday at the Newtown Country Club before heading to Candlewood Country Club to take on New Milford next Wednesday.

Pomperaug 93.5, Newtown 56.5
It had all the earmarks of a sweep for the Newtown High School boysâ track and field team, but troubles in the field events derailed them.
With all the track events completed on Monday afternoon in Southbury, the Nighthawks had a clear advantage over New Fairfield and Notre Dame and a slim, nine-point advantage over Pomperaug and even if the âHawks entertained the idea of a sweep, the Panthers were much too strong in the field events and pulled away for the win.
The Panthers finished first in all seven field events.
Kevin Hoyt was a double winner for the âHawks, capturing the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races in 4:43.64 and 10:57.7, respectively. Charlie Baldour was first in the 800 meters at 2:05.5, Jamie Goodwick was first in the 200 dash at 23.9 and Matt Boland shared first in the long jump with a leap of 18-7.
Meanwhile, the locals took first in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
Zack Schwartz was second in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races, providing some valuable back-end points for the âHawks and helping the locals continue their dominance in the distance events, while Brian Pennarola also grabbed a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash.
The âHawks, now 3-2 overall, will host Bethel and Weston on Monday at Blue & Gold Stadium.

GIRLS TENNIS

The rust from a long vacation layoff didnât stop âem. Neither did the terrible court conditions in Fairfield.
The Newtown High School girlsâ tennis team swept Notre Dame, 7-0, on Monday afternoon to improve to 2-3 on the season.
None of the individual matches were all that challenging for the locals as Kristene Salbu, Christina Ciamarra, Maxx Zimmer and Charlotte Manos grabbed singles wins.
The duos of Katie Serock/ Jenna Moser, Nikia McFadden/Lauren DeFelice and Erin Nemeth/Jenna Himmelfarb captured doubles wins.
The girls hosted Masuk on Wednesday and were in New Milford on Thursday. They will return home next Monday and Tuesday  to host Brookfield and Bethel before hitting the road again to face Immaculate and New Fairfield in a very busy week.
