Celebrating Me And You

On the afternoon of April 5, Reed Intermediate School hosted a session of Newtown Youth Services program, Celebrate Me, Celebrate You. The six-week program, designed to encourage positive self-esteem, brings in different speakers or activities each week.

Some of the speakers have addressed health issues like nutrition and the practice of yoga. Irish dancers have spoken about their activities and taught the students a few steps. One week, Newtown Middle School’s Resource Officer Gladys Pisano spoke to the students about her work.

On this particular afternoon, members of Greyhound Rescue shared stories of their work with the group. Dawn Adams and her daughter, Katie, brought their dog, Ginger, and Ann Manley brought her dog, Abby.

They also brought along Dixon, a large male greyhound who is being trained for adoption. After working as racing dogs, the animals need to be socialized. Members of Greyhound Rescue take the dogs into their homes to prepare them for adoption.

Mrs Adams and Mrs Manley gave the students considerable information about the breed, describing the life of a racing dog, characteristics of greyhounds as pets, etc. While the women spoke, the dogs moved freely around the room, stopping to be pet by many willing hands.

The program wrapped up April 12 with a pizza party and T-shirt decorating. Program facilitators were Pamela Beck and Kim Wise, an intern from Western Connecticut State University.
