In A Quandary

To the Editor:

Town leaders put school supporters in a terrible position. If they voted for the budget, they were forced to approve the budgeted principal and interest amounts to pay for the bonds to be issued to renovate Bridgeport Hall at Fairfield Hills to become a new town hall. An overflowing crowd of citizens voiced their opposition to this new town hall plan at the February 7 Legislative Council meeting at the middle school. The council failed to respond.

If school supporters voted against the budget, they faced almost certain cuts to the school budget.

Nonparents faced a similar dilemma. They realized the importance of supporting the police department, park and recreation, etc. but opposed the new town hall.

Voters should never have to face such a choice. If town leaders want to place a new town hall as the top priority for the town, citizens should be given a clear choice in a separate referendum.

We face another referendum with no way to resolve the issue. Someone must step forward to lead us out of this quandary.
